Lightroom3's export feature provides setting to export the width and height of photographs of all images. The problem is that it does not apply these settings to the portrait and landscape formats of the group of photos being processed. For example, the 1000px X 750px of the settings of all the landscape photos are not applied correctly to the portrait photos. I have to switch the settings and export portraits in another process. You could just as easily apply the longest px value requested to the longest side of the image and process all photos in one pass.

It would also be nice to keep me in the loop on upcoming Photoshop beta's, I would be pleased to participate.

Longest Side is already an available option. You could also just put the longest side size as both dimensions and accomplish the same thing: 1000x1000 in your example.

http://labs.adobe.com/ has had LR4 as a public beta for some weeks now and there is a special forum for giving feedback on that.
