Photoshop: Problems with trial CS6 crashing

Hi,

I downloaded a trial version of CS6 because I'm thinking of buying it but can't get it to work with a lot of big files for very long. I have a new clean computer w/16 gb RAM. I updated the program & enlarged scratch disks and RAM memory usage. Ram available is now 81% or 11902mb. I increased caches to 6 from 4, scratch disks are one @ 174,46GB on boot up disk- a 250gb solid state drive, and one @ 1775.29GB on an external hard drive. I don't think it ever gets to the second scratch disc. Maybe it never gets to the first... This was happening before the added cartoon bubble and toonit plugins were added. It was also happening before topaz pluggins.

I had wanted to download CS6 but got CS6 extended instead for some reason. Is that the reason why my graphics card info says OpenCL Unavailable? The card does not have much memory but is supposed to be compatable w/CS6. Drivers are updated.

I have Avast AV and PS has been excepted from the sand box as far as I can see.

Thanks, Lynn

First, try disabling all your third party plugins.

After that. we'd need more information about the crashing module name and what you are doing when it crashes to narrow down a cause.
It could be anything from corrupt files on disk to bugs in driver software.

Thanks both of you :)

I will try some of the suggestions above. I also looked at what I'm guessing you mean by modules in the events reports and found something with adobe manager and have updated that as well. The other 2 adverse adobe events were toonit. Also found this which I'm not sure if it has anything to do with this;

Yeah. Disabling the plug-ins is probably the right place to start.

would really seem so, but probley isn't. Toonit uses a LOT of resources, it's a big plugin- program really. & it was crashing before toonit. Seems like some kind of memory/cache problem my uneducated guess. I disabled open- whatever with the graphics card & will try maxing it out tonight.

OK. Toonit is installed again and help from graphics card is now unchecked in the PS program. It's no longer crashing. HOWEVER... now my computer will no longer recognise my D7000 nikon camera. What is up? How do I fix this?

I changed the program to open NEF files back to viewnx2 AND reinstalled viewnx2 and it's STILL not able to recognise the camera. Do I need to uninsatll PS6? and if I do so can I again download the trial?

Or... can I download a trial of 5.5?

Sounds like you were crashing in the video card driver.

What do you mean by "does not recognize" your camera?
Do you mean ACR doesn't open your RAW files, or something else?
That could be anything from needing to install the camera drivers, to needing to update ACR.

We need to know what behavior/problem you're seeing to provide more help.

The computer will not recognize that a camera is there at all until I plug and unplug the usb. I have to unplug my mouse then plug in the camera usb. Then I'll get the popup for choosing which program to use on it, but neither program can find the camera. Usually if I look in "computer" (windows 7) it indicates D7000.

You might need to reinstall the drivers for the D7000.
But it could be that you just accidentally changed a preference for how to handle the camera when it is plugged in.

Should I try rechecking the video card in PS and restarting?

Yes, but it may start crashing again -- and that would confirm that the video driver was causing the crashes.

Nope... upgraded cameraRAW, rechecked graphics card in PS and changed camera playback to D7000 rather than "all". No Go. All of these with restarting the computer. My next thought is unplug the computer for 5 minutes FWIW.

Any other ideas?

What are you trying to solve? Enabling the GPU in Photoshop just re-enables the GPU and has nothing to do with your camera drivers or camera settings.

Your camera problems should have nothing to do with the crashes you were experiencing (unless maybe you had a third party camera plugin that was buggy).

Let's stick to solving one problem at a time.

"What are you trying to solve? Enabling the GPU in Photoshop just re-enables the GPU and has nothing to do with your camera drivers or camera settings."

How would I know that? I'm not going to assume that if something stops working right after.

No 3rd party camera plugins. All I know is that the computer stopped recognizing the camera after installing PS6. After disabling the graphics card to be more precise.

No, the computer stopped recognizing the camera around the same time. That's correlation, which is not the same as causation.

And how could disabling the GPU have any effect on the camera?

The camera issue is unrelated to Photoshop and the crashes you were having.

Is there a link to plain old PS CS6? I tried to download it and got PS CS6 Extended instead. Which I'm not really interested in. From what I've been reading the extended version requires a better graphics card. I'd like to try CS6, plain version. The download link as of sometime last week wasn't working- was downloading extended. How can I uninstall Extended and still download the trial of plain 6?

The trial is always the extended version. Using the 3D features from Extended requires a better video card. But extended just adds some features (like 3D), so you're not missing anything.

Camera driver had somehow been erased.
Thanks for your help. Would still like to try plain version of cs6 if possible.

The new computer seems to have some bad RAM installed in it. They'll be switching it out next week. Thanks all.
