Problems with coloring using Photoshop

Recently, I have been experiencing difficulties with my Photoshop Cs5.1 (64bit) with respect to coloring.
I can't color over an existing color which belongs to the same color group but has a different tonal value.(That is to say: I can't color over brown with a darker brown belonging to the same type). However, I can use other colors like red or yellow to color over; with the exception that the resulting color comes out looking faded.

But the weird thing is, when I use black to color over my browns, it comes out as this greyish blue. And all this coloring happens in a single layer; regardless if it's set to normal or multiply.
Is there come image mode I have to set to? Or is it a software glitch? I'm using Photoshop cs5 essentials

Check the blend mode and brush settings. It sounds like you simply changed the tool blend mode.
