I am not able to place a shape in a layer. I don't know if I inadvertantly hit a wrong button or what. When I drag the shape on the layer and hit enter it just disappears. Edit has undo shape, howver, nothing showes. It was working fine until this last week

Check the options bar for the shape tool - it's probably not set to create a shape layer.

This was some help. However, there was no option to create a shape layer. I have also discovered that Shift - press shortcut has been enabled and when I type it just switches tools. I went into general preferences to try and reset. It is still enabled.

Yes, there is such an option -- look at the options bar for the tool for the options for shape, path, or pixels.

Thank you for your help! There is a section called feather, is set at 0 px. Should this be higher, or what is the default setting?

The shape tools don't have a feather option. Which tool are you actually using?

I am using elements 10 and it is called the cookie cutter.

I have 4 options the first is shapes where there are several to chose from. Then I have shape options, unconstrained is marked, feather which I've moved to 50 px and there is a check box for crop

OK, you should have told us which application you were using up front.
(I'll change the topic title to reflect that)

Someone familiar with the simplified tools in Elements can probably help you more than I can.

Sorry! I had marked that I was using Elements 10, however, I was probably in the wrong place. I appreciate your help and passing the problem on to someone else. If it's woth anything I wish I had bought the higher level program.
