I have Photoshop Elements 9 on Mac and I am having issues opening pictures. When I first open Photoshop I can select and open a picture no problem. If I try to open another picture, it will not open. I have to shut down Photoshop completely then open it up again in order to open a different picture. The problem only started after updating to Lion. Anyone else having this problem?

Tried to use PSE 9 today on my new Macbook Pro with Lion. Had persistent crash problems, for example, every time I tried to use the "move tool." Woman next to me also had same new computer running same system and version of PSE and she kept crashing as well. Two other similar users in the room had no problem. People in the room using the older Snow Leopard had no problem either. Any insights would be appreciated!

Same here. It's crashing repeatedly when I am trying to drag layers etc. 4 times in the last hour!

Same here. Deleted the program and reinstalled. Worked fine for an hour then crashed repeatedly.

If you're also on a MacBook Pro, have you tried disabling the automatic graphics/GPU switching?

Right after writing this post I went to the "problems" posts and found the solution to uncheck the auto graphics in my energy preferences and it worked great. Thanks Chris!

>> it just crashes and I have to force quit

Crashing and force quit are contradictory.
Did it crash (and give you a crash report dialog), or did it hang (requiring a force quit)?

Thanks for reply, Think I have sorted, just had spin coloured circle and was unable to do anything so had to force quit, It seems it was looking for a deleted file, I will know next time.

Ok, then you had a hang or freeze. That means the program is still running, but unresponsive.

My problem was repetitive crashes; crash report comments followed some, but not all, of the time; in some instances there was a longer than expected time gap between the crashing and the appearance of the report box.

Apple changed their crash reporting code a bit in Lion. It may take longer sometimes. But I hadn't heard of it never showing after a crash.

In my case the problems were related to the file vault which I had in use before upgrading into Lion (in Lion it's now called 'Legacy FileVault'). I can create a Catalog in PSE Organizer, but after I close the program and re-open it, all the photos have red offline-symbols. It seems that Organizer is not able to open the photos which have been encrypted. It's weird since it sees them when you choose it during catalog creation. I tested this by copying photos outside of the encrypted area and there everything works just fine. All the photos (both encrypted area and non-encrypted) are on my MAC HD.

Alright, that sounds like an OS level bug (file system not responding correctly with the "legacy" encrypted volume), we'll have to investigate.

also, now it's not able to stay connected to external HD. After you've imported pics from external HD into your catalog, it immediately shows that the pics are offline even though the HD is active and visible.

So it seems that the organizer has some problems with Lion. I hope these issues will be fixed quickly since without organizer the usage of Elements is far more laborious. I was already thinking about changing into another software since I can't wait forever the fix, but since PSE has the features I like I hope Adobe will come up with the solution pretty soon.

I have had problems opening any sort of digital scrapbooking paper, stickers, stamps and pictures since installing Lion. What is worse is I just bought it the second week in July for my new MacBook Pro. It just crashes and quits every time I try to open anything.

Do you see a crash report or just a sudden disappearance as soon as you launch or does it happen on opening a file?

I was using PSE8 with iPhoto (preferences set to edit in PSE8) and Leopard down loading CR2 images from my Canon 550D with no problems.
Then I upgraded to Lion OS 10.7. PSE8 started to crash. Solved the crashing by reloading PSE8 from disc.
Then PSE8 wouldn't recognise CR2 files and would only open in JPEG.

Downloaded a 30 day trail PSE9. Now if I ask iPhoto to edit thumbnail PSE9 opens but no image appears - have to drag the thumbnail across - and it still only appears in JPEG!.

Cannot process my RAW files... is it glitch in Lion or PSE9 or iPhoto? and more to the point - how to I fix it?

Still having the same problem tried some of the solutions offered here (thanks everyone), but still same problem. Can open pictures fine the first time, then the "open" button is greyed out when I try to open another pic....can't believe Adobe still has no solution for this. Extremely disappointed!

Hi Chris,

For issue regarding opening more than one files, please try following workaround -

1. Open iPhoto and drag any image from it to the PSE Editor icon on the doc.
2. Press Ctrl+O and from the open file dialog box drag the image into the PSE workspace when all other images are in floating windows mode.
3. Set PSE as an default editor in iPhoto and then open images from there.
4. Import images from Iphoto into the organizer . From the organizer open photes in PSE Editor.

Please try and let us know about your experiences with this route.

I get all of these workarounds. Thanks for your input and trying to help. I can close the program and reopen it as a "workaround" also. The point is that I should be able to click "OPEN" and open any picture I want to open no matter where it is located. I could do this prior to upgrading to Lion. So I appreciate everyone coming up with workarounds, but it is missing the point that clicking "Open" to open a picture should not be the "wrong way" to open a picture, it should be a valid option to open a picture. I would expect Adobe to update PSE to work the way it should instead of developing work arounds to get around the bug

I appreciate your response Amy, it was very insightful. While it is quite obvious that I will have to use one of the workarounds suggested if I want to open multiple pictures, it still doesn't change the fact that it is a bug that should be fixed in my opinion.
Several other Mac programs I use had bugs with the upgrade to Lion, however, every other program has released an update to correct the bug.
It is fine that you are more willing to accept bugs like this in expensive programs from huge companies like Adobe than I am. No one is stewing over this, just pointing out the obvious and was hoping someone from Adobe was reading. Sorry if you took it personally as I did appreciate your responses (as pointed out in my previous response) until the last one.
Good luck to you too!

Chris I am having the exact same problem!!!!! I pray you find an answer because I am going crazy having to restart Elements every time I want to open a photo after my initial one(s). I have blogged less and less because I rely on using Elements to work with my photos. Now its just too time consuming to do as often as I'd like.
Please Adobe, fix this!

Since updating to Lion, I cannot get Organiser to download photos from card reader and save into a file. In the saving to a folder pop-up, it's buttons doesn't activate or lights up, etc. Just freeze at that stage which is very frustrating as I want to see photos. I prefer Elements over iPhoto.

What should I be doing?

Thanks

I am using an iMac i3 with Lion (just updated) and PSE 9. I am unable to view the jpegs I am now importing into my system. So what exactly is the 'workaround' or fix? This is truly disappointing .

I have a macbook and I recently bought PSE 10. Every time I try to edit a photo in PSE, I get a hang or freeze. The colored spinning circle makes it so I have to force shut down. I did a factory reset, deleted all pictures (besides a few to edit), and I just don't know what else to do. I don't know how to disable the automatic graphics/GPU switching, I tried looking in my system preferencest know what to do, and I need this PSE for work. I need to edit photos for my business.. This is a huge setback.. Thank you for your time....

After I bought PSE myself, I'm now using Apple's Aperture instead since Adobe has such huge problems with Mac, specially with Lion but also with SnowLeopard. Aperture is not the same but at least it works. If Adobe can't create software that works and if correcting problems takes forever, then there's only one resolution which is stop buying Adobe's products. I think the way Adobe's software loads like hundrets of small software parts when it starts (just like loading DLL's) might be part of the problem. Maybe the code has already too much history load built in?

Please provide more details on:
'I can open them in the organizer, but when I click on full edit it does nothing. ' - What are the actual steps? I guess, you selected an image in Organizer and opened it in Editor. Now you clicked on 'Full' label under 'Edit' button. Isn't it opening the panel as shown in snapshot attached in this post. Also what happens when you click on effect say 'Fresco'?

'I even tried going to the file and clicking open with ..Photoshop elements and nothing' - Please follow steps mentioned on blog: http://tinyurl.com/ck8uufk
