LIGHTROOM 4: problem exporting photos with 'high detail' setting

all the photos i've processed with lightroom 4 that have had the detail slider quite high have got massive noise issues!
1 of my customers told me about it and I assumed they had made a mistake. Another told me about it today so i checked it out.
Viewing the photos on outlook or preview (on the mac) they look awful! However on a web browser (or Lightroom itself) they look fine!
I've gone through all my photos from this year, and it only started happening in March (when i replaced Lightroom 3 with 4).

this is what it looked like to me:

this is what it looked like to the customer:

Which detail slider are you referring to? They exist for Sharpening and Noise Reduction (both luminance and color). Maybe post a screenshot of the entire detail panel settings so we can see what's happening.

When in Lightroom, in the Develop module, zoom in 1:1 on the image. Do you see the same result as the customer sees?

When applying sharpening, you should always have the image zoomed to 1:1 to see the most accurate display of results. For performance and accuracy reasons, Lightroom doesn't show sharpening at zoom levels less than 1:1.
