Lightroom CC/6: Problem with my AMD/ATI graphics processor on Windows

Hello,

I've installed LR CC on my Win 7 64 bits desktop computer. It has an ATI FirePro 4800 graphic processor with latest drivers and OpenGL 6.14+ support.

But LR CC says " Graphics processor acceleration has been disabled due to errors". When I ckeck on "System Info", it says "Check OpenGL support: Failed".

So how to fix this problem ?

Thank you for your help.

The problem is in the video card driver -- updating the driver from ATI/AMD's website will probably solve it. In some cases though, it may be another GPU in the system (like an integrated GPU) that is causing the errors -- if you have a second GPU, you should also update the drivers for it from the GPU maker's website.

Thank you for your answer. I've just updated my driver, restarted my computer and the problem is the same. I don't have a second GPU and I don't think Ihave an integrated GPU. DO you have an idea what to do now ?

Thank you.

I've checked in my Devices Manager > Displays Adapter and there is only the ATI Fire Pro displayed.

Well maybe my card just doesn't support OpenGL3.3... And of course it can't be OpenGL 6+ as it is said in Catalyst Control Center, 'cause last version is 4.5, right ?
Do you know a way to check the OpenGL version ?

Thank you

So, I've installed "OpenGL Extension Viewer" and now I nknow my GPU is running OpenGL 4.4. I've updated DirectX to the last version.

And problem's still here.

Help me please !

Same here, latest AMD drivers. OpenGL 4.4
Works with Photoshop, works with Capture One Pro, doesn't work with Lightroom!

I too have issue with radion 6800 current drivers. My 8.2 system also shows a Intel hd3000? Is that part of the processor? I've tried to disable. Same issue.

It says Check OpenGL Support: Failed.
The View Open GL Extensions utility says OpenGL is V4.4
And works with Photoshop and Capture One Pro.

Hello Steve,
Yes, as I said OpenGL 4.4, checked with Open GL ExtensionViewer, because on Adobe "System info" it is written "Check OpenGL support: Failed".

If you search on the Adobe LR forum, there are several threads on this topic, some of them quite long already. Seems as though AMD HR Radeon GPUs are specifically affected and LR won't allow the GPU feature to run.

This is affecting me too:

I only have one discrete GPU in my system;
It's running the latest AMD driver (confirmed);
It supports OpenGL 4.4
It has 1Gb of VRAM (the min recommended);
Works perfectly in PS CC 2014 with advanced settings active...

But it fails the LR OpenGL check!

In this thread (https://forums.adobe.com/message/7465...), an Adobe employee states "We have been informed that AMD is aware of this" so it appears to be a known issue now. In another thread a user reports being told that Adobe are aware and investigating.

Yes, we (Adobe) are investigating this.  Thanks for your patience.

In the meantime, it would be helpful to check if you have the latest AMD driver installed. One user (in another thread) reported that he not only had to run the driver update, but first had to completely uninstall the existing driver, and then install the latest driver (from scratch). He then tried Lightroom CC again and found that GPU feature was enabled and working correctly.

Yeah, sometimes older bits of previous drivers get left installed, and cause problems.

Thanks Eric. Good to hear from the main man himself. :-)

I uninstalled my driver completely prior to installing the current one (always do), although I did this just prior to downloading and installing LR CC; are you saying it's worth trying an uninstall/re-install again, now that LR CC is on my system?

Thank you very much Eric (Chan, not me !). It works ! I've completely uninstalled my AMD driver and then reinstalled it from scratch and now my GPU is now recognized by LR CC !!!

Hopefully I've not uninstalled al Adobe CC products...

OK, thank you very much once again, back to photo editing now !

Eric - to avoid keep checking this and many other threads, is there a prefered place we should look for any news/updates on this issue? maybe an RSS feed?

I have tried a full uninstall of drivers and re-install, no luck.

Hi everyone,

My name is Eric Chan, and I work on Camera Raw and Lightroom as an engineer.

My team has been investigating the reports of GPU support being disabled in Lightroom CC and Camera Raw 9 on some Windows systems with AMD GPUs. I am currently looking into this.

[edited: removed instructions for downloading utility software, since I have enough log information already]

Thanks very much for your help and patience.

Hello again everyone,

Thanks to all of you who provided log files so far. This has been very helpful. I have enough information at the moment to do some investigation, internally.

At the moment I do not require any more log files. If I need more information going forward, I will reply to this thread and ask.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi everyone,

Earlier, I posted a software utility to help gather some GPU-related information (by means of a text log file). Thanks to many of you who downloaded, ran the utility, and provided the log information to me by email. I got some very helpful information, but unfortunately I still have not gotten to the bottom of it.

(In case you're curious, we have many of the same cards internally at Adobe and have tested with them, also using the latest drivers available from the AMD site, but in our test systems the GPU support in ACR 9 and Lr CC is working correctly.)

So, I'm back with a request for some more information. I have made an update to my software utility which will run further ACR/Lr-specific GPU diagnostics to help me understand better what is causing the issue. If you'd like to participate, please keep reading ...

Instructions (very similar to earlier):

1. The utility software is named "acr_gpu_test2". You can download it (a 39 MB zip file) here:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3...

2. Unzip the file. Inside is an executable file named "acr_gpu_test2.exe".

3. Double-click acr_gpu_test2.exe. A window should pop up momentarily, then go away.

4. You should now have a new file named "log.txt" in the same folder as acr_gpu_test2.exe. Please email that log.txt file to me. You can use my personal email address, which is madmanchan@gmail.com.

Thanks,

Eric Chan

I follow your instructions but do not get the text.log file after running the exe. I have an AMD FIrepro V4900 with the latest driver and get the same error message about gpu acceleration.

thanks

Eric, I would like to participate in your further ACR/Lr-specific GPU diagnostics . This is this an issue with FirePro cards like the FirePro v5800. FirePro cards use a different driver from the consumer radeon cards. so the fix listed does not apply to my issues or to the original poster who has a FirePro v4800.

My latest ....
Started with version 14.12 - this failed
Went to 14.9 - still failing
then 14.4 (from April 2014) - this worked for me.

HD 6570

... however, lightroom is now sluggish. The first couple of mins is ok, then the fans go crazy and everything slows right down. I suspect the data transfer from CPU to GPU is slower than not using the GPU for the calculations. I will continue and see how it goes - if it gets too much, then I'll turn off this feature

On my older computer I have to turn off GPU Acceleration for LR 6 because everything is jerky and slow. It is an ATI Quadro of some sort.

On my newer computer, with a newer nVidia card, the GPU works great.

Steve - I think GPU performance is very much dependent on 'other' hardware too.
Having a fast GPU is no good if the memory or bus speed is slow.

i.e.
If the time to do a task is 100ms without the GPU,
And it is 20ms with GPU plus 200ms to copy the data to the GPU,
then it's obvious that running without the optimization will be better.

And I'm sure this will vary depending on the feature you are using so some parts of LR will be better and some will be worse.

I reinstalled an old driver version and voila; - it works. But on reinstalling I had a blue screen, :( but so far it hasn't crashed.
I am somewhat biased to this downgrading.

I was on 14.4 at some stage, and it didn't work. I'm now on the latest, and I'll wait in case Eric needs to run more tests.
