Elements 9: Problem backing up catalog (Windows 10)

Hi, I'm having problems backing up my catalog. I backup fairly regularly and this is the first time I've had any problems with backup.

I'm running Windows 10 and Photoshop Elements 9.

I am trying to do a full catalog backup to my external hard disk. The catalog is approx 16 GB. Each time I attempt a backup, it gets to 36% and then fails with an error "Error encountered when writing files".

I noticed that it hasn't created any JPGs yet, only xmp files in the backup.
I've followed all the troubleshooting steps included in the link below but without any success - backup still fails at the same point.

I've also tried writing the backup to different locations - a new folder on the external HDD and the internal HDD. Again, the same problems.

I'm looking for any advice which might resolve this problem. Thanks in advance.
