Problem after installing LR Classic - library not opening

after installing LR Classic, the catalogue is taking literally hours to open, and show any images. Not sure if it has hung or is doing something in the background; going to close it, a warning comes up that LR has not finished writing metadata changes into XMP. Top left corner says 'syncing photos. Indexing 10,212 photos' This number has not changed...

PS - have tried deleting the programme, and reinstalling it.  No change, but on opening, the number of images to be indexed has changed to 10,199.  So it has managed to index 13 images apparently...

Should add, this is on a 2016 iMac 27" (5k display).

Please give your computer the "once over"! Run Onyx (https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html), reboot. Run Disk Warrior (https://www.alsoft.com), reboot. I'm not sure it's going to help in your situation, but it couldn't hurt! Also, what happens when you double-click on your actual Catalog (in your Home/Pictures folder?), instead of launching Lightroom and assuming it's finding the right one?

Some suggestions for you:

1. Try reset the Lr preferences when launching Lr by holding down the Shfit+Alt (or Option on Mac).

2. Try turning off the Lr mobile sync and face detection by expanding the identity plate area on the top-left.

3. Does this problem happen on a brand new catalog?

I have the same problem.

The reset pref - does not help. Lr cannot start, so shift-alt - does not help
The diskclean have nothing to do with install that does not run - have tried it, does not help.

So anyone have some suggestion - The Lr Classic that cannot start - a pretty fatal problem :-)
