Photoshop: preview key doesn't work with some adjustment layers

I've noticed that the preview adjustment key '/' doesn't work with all adjustment layers, in fact it seems to only reliably work with curves. This has been the case ever since CS 4 with the introduction of the open GL interface. I've seen this across multiple version of the Mac OS, however I usually use a dual monitor setup, so perhaps that has something to do with it. Yee olde preview checkbox and shortcut are sorely missed on occasion.

First off, the keyboard shortcut to temporarily disable an adjustment preview is "\" (backslash), not "/" (forward slash). That is, you should be using the key in the upper right of the keyboard (with "|"), not the one in the lower right (with "?"). The / (forward slash) is for toggling the transparency lock for the current layer (this command can also be tool specific if using a brush based tool or the crop).

Second, I'm not exactly sure what previous behavior you are comparing this to. Since Photoshop CS4, we've had the Adjustments Panel, which allows you to change the settings of your Adjustment Layers without opening a dialog box. In Photoshop CS3, where we first introduce the Adjustment Layer, you still had a dialog box when working with Adjustments. Clicking the "/" or the "\" while in a dialog box isn't doing anything special for me in CS3. It certainly isn't toggling the Preview option.

But I do see that the "\" (backslash) key doesn't disable the preview temporarily with all Adjustment Layers (about half do, half don't).

Hi Brett-
Thanks for your reply. Indeed I made a typo I meant '\'. The thing that I long for is the Preview checkbox and hitting the 'P' key to check and uncheck the adjustment Preview in CS3. This method worked for all of the adjustments in CS3.

I guess this important thing however is that you are able to replicate my problem that the preview shortcut does not work for all adjustment layers.

PSCS5.1 on Mac OS 10.7.2 - They're all working for me right now.
I also have a dual monitor set-up.

I wonder what's triggering it.
Thanks for reporting this. I'll work with Brett to see if we can't narrow down the cause.

Thanks,
Meredith
