Lightroom Classic: Presets are a nightmare to organize

Let me get right to it.

1.

I want to move some of my presets from the "User Presets" folder to a Custom Folder e.g. "Riccphoto"

a) This is what I tried and worked in previous LR versions!

I right clicked on my presets in the developer module -> click show in finder -> create a folder in /Users/riccphoto/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Riccphoto -> move the presets inside this folder "Riccphoto" -> restart Lightroom

Instead of showing in a group, they still show under "User Presets"

b) I then create a "Dummy" preset as described by https://lightroomkillertips.com/managing-develop-presets-7-3-update-classic/

I created a dummy preset "test" in a group "test group" -> this created also a physical folder in  /Users/riccphoto/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/test group

so far so good...

I then moved all the presets into this group in finder and restarted Lightroom. BUT the presets still remain in "User Presets" instead of "test group"

I mean cmon, this worked before!!!

I then tried to move the presets individually in Lightroom into the "test group" group. THIS WORKED!

This is so confusing. I used to just backup my preset folder and restore it and it all worked. What have you done Adobe???

2.

Lastly, in previous LR versions you went to "Preferences -> Presets -> Locations -> Show Lightroom Presets folder" and you could simply copy paste and organise them on ur hard drive.

This whole preset management is screwed up, behaviours have changed and a nightmare to deal with. I have been using LR since v4 and this is just ridiculous!

3.

Not all presets work on all JPG AND TIFF ANYMORE!!! You now have to turn off "Treatment & Profile" and save the preset in order to apply it both to JPG and TIFF.

This is a new behaviour! Weirdly enough, when I copy Settings from one image leaving "Treatment & Profile" checked, and paste it on another Photo (JPG or TIFF) it works.

WHY does saving a preset with checked "treatment and profile" NOT work, BUT Copy and Paste Settings does???

4.

Lastly, the whole scrolling through presets is LAGGY!!!!!!! Cmon guys!

Presets are no longer organized in groups by means of physical folders, they are now organised by a field inside the preset. That means you cannot reorganise presets in the Finder, you have to do this in Lightroom.

The new profiles have consequences for presets too. If you save a raw-profile in a preset, then this preset is only available when you have selected a raw file. It all makes perfect sense, but you have to get used to it.

That is simply NOT true. If you create a new group, it will also create a folder physically on ur hard drive.

Yes, but the opposite is not true. Creating a folder in the Finder won't create a group in Lightroom for the reasons I told you.

Re organizing presets by using Finder/Explorer: LR is now very inconsistent about this. As Johan explained, the group containing a preset is actually stored inside the preset's .xmp file. It doesn't matter which folder the file is stored in -- LR reads the group from the field inside the file.  But as you've observed, LR stores a new preset in a folder corresponding to the group's name.  (Last I checked, Adobe Camera Raw, which shares presets with LR, didn't do that, but maybe that's changed.)

So you can no longer use Finder/Explorer to reorganize your presets using LR's built-in features.

However, you can use the Organize Into Groups command of the free Fix Presets plugin to do so.

It's even more confusing -- some presets with Treat & Profile are visible for JPEGs, and some are not.  Adobe claims this is by design, but in my opinion, it's a bad design.

Please add your constructive opinion to this bug report:

Be sure to click Me Too and Follow in the upper-right corner, which will make it a little more likely Adobe will prioritize a fix, and you'll be notified of changes in the bug's status.

I will definitely do that. I am also very unhappy, there is no red line, its confusing, non-coherent, just a mess and simply bad design.

I feel relieved that not only myself but others are experiencing this BAD design and even got a plugin to make this work, I haven't tried but will do so.

If presets are really stored by some code within the xmp, why add physical folders anyway by Lightroom?
@ADOBE
GIVE US BACK THE ABILITY TO SORT VIA FOLDERS IN FINDER!!!!!

I can't answer your question why Lightroom still creates a folder even though it's just for show, but I do have an idea why the organisation is now inside the presets. That is because they also sync to the creative cloud and your mobile devices, and so there needs to be a way to organise them (in the same groups) on these devices as well.

There is a bug in LR Preferences in the Presets tab, the Show Folder button doesn't reveal the correct folder.

And there should be an export feature for presets.

I barely use presets so it isn't a problem for me but I know some people have hundreds.

It is flawed Adobe did agree to that on my twitter account and is prioritising a fix. In no way this is a feature request, how could u possibly see this design flaw as a feature request.
It has cost me time to investigate and find workarounds that I shouldn't have to.

> Add a new button that goes to Develop Presets only?

This would be my vote, but not to Develop Presets only, but to the Camera Raw Settings folder, since defaults, lens profiles, lens profile defaults, camera profiles, curve presets, etc. are all there too. The current button is misleading, and it has been for years, but its priority has increased immeasurably due to moving Develop Presets there too.

Rather than two buttons leading to the current two places, I would like to see those places changed. All presets and profiles should be stored/synced in the Create Cloud. Now that there is no perpetual licence version of Lightroom anymore, there is no reason to keep these assets locally.

I agree with you Johan, no extra buttons here and there. Makes things too difficult and complicated. One coherent place across all platforms and utilise the creative cloud.
Or move to Capture One.. haha

That would be better still!
