Preserve Former File Name

It would be useful if when exporting with a name change, Lightroom would, perhaps in some comment in the EXIF data, add the previous name of the file.

I've often thought the same thing.  It would be helpful.

When an export renames the exported file, LR stores the original filename in the metadata field XMP:PreservedFileName.

And the original file name will then appear in the Metadata panel just beneath "File Name" In the "Original File Name" field. This field only appears in the panel if the file name has been changed.

That is only when the file name has been changed on import or later on in Lightroom. The question was about a file name that is changed on export.

In LR 8.4.1, when a photo is first imported, LR adds its filename to the Preserved File Name field, regardless of whether the file is renamed:

When that photo's metadata is saved to a sidecar, the metadata contains the original filename in XMP:PreservedFileName, even if the photo's filename hasn't changed:
$ exiftool -xmp:preservedfilename DSC02512.xmp
Preserved File Name             : DSC02512.ARW
When the photo is exported with renaming, its metadata still contains that original filename in XMP:PreservedFileName:
$ exiftool -xmp:preservedfilename 001.jpg
Preserved File Name             : DSC02512.ARW
If you're not observing this, perhaps you're running a version prior to LR 8.3, in which Preserved File Name was introduced:

As an FYI the 'Preserved File Name' is only visible inside LR when the Metadata panel selector is set to 'Default.' This appears to be an oversight with the implementation since I would expect it also to be visible with the Metadata panel selector set to 'EXIF and IPTC.'

That explains why I haven't seen it. I keep it in 'EXIF and IPTC' mode. I hadn't even noticed that they changed 'Original File Name' to 'Preserved File Name'. When did that happen?

That changed in LR 8.3 -- see above for link.
