Premiere Elements 9: Poor performance with ATI Radeon HD 5xxx

I have an i7 with ATI Radeon HD 5700 (12MB RAM, SSD array). When I apply a filter or transition in Premier Elements 9, the performance of PE9 drops miserably, even though only one thread is peaking. I realize now (after purchasing & installing) that the HD 5xxx series are not supported cards, but given how popular they are and how much they kill the nVidia or even most of the 4xxx series, will Adobe be adding support?

I assume this is the source of my woes, as nothing else seems remotely bottlenecked on the system. When I preview, all I get is the audio and an occasional video frame, so this seems the likely culprit.

The good news is that final rendering is fast -- the estimated times drop really fast thanks to the i7. But still, several minutes of rendering, only to realize that transition you inserted was a little poorly timed isn't a good experience!

Alternately, can someone suggest an equivalently priced video card that doesn't suffer from this problem? I think I'd easily spend $150, although I think I'll be hard pressed to get an overall better card.

Otherwise, I love Adobe, have owned several earlier versions of CS. Sony Vegas HD Studio didn't come close to the usability and power.
