In may ancient version of Photoshop Elements, you could scan in a photo, save it as a JPEG and JPEG would remain the default for all future saves. Now with Photoshop 10, the default is Bitmap, which means I have to manually save each photo as a JPEG. Worse, it saves an additional photo under a Bitmap format that I have to manually delete. Does anyone know a way I can simply import an image from a scanner and simply save it as a JPEG without an unnecessary Bitmap version also being saved? Thanks

Sounds to me like your scanner software is passing a BMP file to Elements, and then Elements assumes you want to save in the same format.

Thanks...I'll see if there is any setting on the scanner I can adjust.

Also please remember that BMP is not Bitmap. Using the wrong terms just makes it more difficult for us to figure out what you're referring to.

Thanks for the head's up, Chris. It still continues to save a second copy of the image as a BMP file....very strange. I have to go in and manually delete.

PSE does not change the format of file scanned by a scanner. In fact PSE simply receive file what scanner passes. And then it tries to save the file in the same format.

Scanner keep passing scanned copy of the same format until you will change its setting.
So to over come this issue please reset your scanner setting as per your requirement and then try it again.
