Lightroom Classic 7.3: Possible image size bug when exporting a photo while offline

Can someone else test this before I submit a bug report to Adobe?

I'm running Lightroom Classic CC 7.3 on a MacBook Pro.

I have a photo that is 5472px X 3648px uncropped and 4834px X 3222px cropped.

I have an export preset that resizes the image to a max of 2048px on the long edge, which I use for posting to Facebook.

The issue that I'm having is that if I'm not connected to the drive that the original image is stored on and I use the export preset on the smart preview, I get an image that is 2261px on the long edge instead of 2048px.

This doesn't make sense.

Edgar,

Is it possible we could see a screenshot of your Export dialog showing the preset settings - particularly the Image Sizing section?

Apologies for the delay, see attached. This is the specific export preset I'm using when I'm working offline.

I am unable to duplicate your results. When I create a file, crop it, create a smart preview and then disconnect the original, I get exactly 2048 px using your settings.

Sometimes weird behavior is corrected/cured by resetting the preferences.

Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.
2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.
3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
4. Close Lightroom.
5. Restart Lightroom.

Does the odd pixel dimension behavior continue after resetting the preferences?

Thanks for getting back to me.

I'll give this a try, but before I do so, do you happen to be able to tell me what settings/preferences will be reset?

I tried searching for an answer on my own but all I could find was instructions on how to reset the preferences and they didnt explain what exactly got reset.

It resets the Lightroom Preferences dialog to the Adobe defaults, so it's usually not that much.

Ok, I went ahead and reset my Lightroom preferences as suggested. Error still occurs. I recorded a video of my screen below, let me know if I'm possibly doing something wrong.

From the recording, I can see that your drives are disconnected/ LR is not reading it as there is a question mark next to each folder. Also, below the histogram, it says smart previews, so that's the file size LR is currently exporting from. Check to make sure your drives are plugged in and active. If they are, then you may have moved the folders outside of LR, so LR don't know where to look for them.

What you need to do is:

  • Right-click on the top-level folder(s) in the folder panel
  • choose "Find missing Folder"
  • Point to the folder location
  • This will update all sub-folders as well
  • Repeat if you have more than one top-level folder

That’s the issue though. Take a look at Rikk’s comment above, he followed my steps, including disconnecting the media drive, and his exported at the correct size:

https://feedback.photoshop.com/photos...

When I leave my office and for some reason need to export from a disconnected drive using the smart previews I generated, the export preset doesn’t honor the resizing options.

Even though it’s using a smart preview to export the image while the drive is offline, shouldn’t it export at the correct size since the export preset is resizing to a smaller size than the smart preview?

Victoria Bampton has a nice article on Preference Reset implications: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

Edgar,

Are you using a preset you've built some time ago for the export? If you rebuild the preset again from scratch, does the new preset behave correctly?

Weird... That seems to have fixed it, here's what I found:

If I select my existing Facebook export preset ("Photo 2048px") and click on the Add button to create a new preset, it copies the settings from the existing preset and it results in the same issue.

What I then did is select one of the built in Lightroom presets, I selected the For Email (Hard Drive) preset, then I clicked on Add. The new preset was a copy of the For Email preset which resulted in an image 640px wide. IT WORKED.

I then changed the new preset field by field and exported an image every time I changed something to be sure that it was still working.

Eventually I got the new preset to look exactly like the existing Facebook export preset but it actually worked as expected.

I'll attach screenshots of each preset below as well as the preset file raw code. Can you tell what the issue is?
