Whenever I try to save a PNG file, and use Save as, the default dialogue box has the "As a Copy" box checked, and I have to uncheck it every time. Is there way to make that box stay unchecked as a default?

Your document has things in it that PNG does not support, so not all the data will be saved, thus you have to save it as a copy.

Well if it's optional, I would prefer not to save it as a copy, as a default. I can't tell any difference.

It isn't optional, because you aren't saving all of your document data and still need to save the document with all it's data in a format that can hold all the document data (PSD, PSB, TIFF, etc.).

If you uncheck the box, you can still save it as a PNG. What data is missing?

I can't know that without seeing all of your document, but most likely you have more than one layer, and PNG can only save a single layer.

No, it's only one layer, with a transparent background. See my screenshot.
