Photoshop: PNG compression and image quality when saving

Hi, new PS user here.  Saving file as PNG, I see there are compression and non-compression options---I thought PNG was a lossless-compression-only format, so guess the compression is happening prior to the PNGing.  What I don't understand is that when I saved a particular image with ColorSync, I was getting about 200K files...when I save same image with PS (save-as), I am getting either about 250K or 880K, depending on compression option...does that mean ColorSync was actually compressing all along?

We are working with large & very complicated B&W line-art images that need to be put into web-usable format for display to look as good/intelligible as possible at 600 pixel and 250 pixel sizes. So far, it looks like PNG works better than JPG for this purpose.  Any thoughts/ideas much appreciated!
