The metadata dialogue needs to be improved. The only way to do it half way efficient today is to "metadata presets/copy/paste", but it defaults way too many checkboxes, among the most annoying is the date/time and rating from the copied metadata. Also, it has a sticky "select" feautre I don't like. By keeping the selection when switching folders, it is way too easy to apply adjustments/meatda on wrong files. Adjustments is not a big deal, but metadata as caption, date, rating is a big deal. I suggest adding a confirm dialog before applying metadata like description and iptc. Added frustration when trying to write caption while having several files selected. The act of writing in the caption field invokes all kinds of keyboard shortcuts, and none of them are related to metadata input. This must be a bug?

The metadata dialog also needs improvement upon import. As it is today, the import dialog defaults to the one used in the previous import. That is all well and dandy when no metadata is applied, but for most photo reporters a typical scenario involves adding metadata upon import. When the metadata presets are defaulted, it is way too easy to apply errant caption to images when doing maintenance/moving between folders using import. A better ui would be an optional metadata dialog upon import (similar to the one featured in Fotostation). Of all the tweaks in Lightroom, this is one of the most important ones for me when speed is of the essence.
