Sometimes the whole "shades of grey" thing just doesn't cut it, and becomes very hard to follow.

I have tried to switch off the graphic card acceleration, and the paths are just same as in older Photoshops: Here is the printscreen of paths in 3 different preferences modes (sorry, I have the Czech version of Photoshop, I don't know the correct english expressions in preferences) 
Has anything changed in the four years since this was first pointed out? It is close to impossible to see the thin path on a 50% neutral gray object. Can you see the curved partial clipping path around the top edge of this diamond? Neither can I.

Its a sample graphic for what I understand; I like the idea of adding weight to the path besides color as well!
My photoshop doesn't have that option either, and I have the latest cc popo installed. I have figured out a hack though: after selecting the pen tool, BEFORE you start drawing your splines, select "Shape" from the first tool pulldown menu, then set the fill to none, pick desire color for the stroke, set the line thickness to something that works for whatever you're doing, and set the stroke alignment to center. Voila! Colored paths in whatever colors you want. A global pref as shown in Oliver's screenshot would be awesome (I think he faked it and is trolling us, unless it's a secret pref) but this workaround is pretty good.

Please please please fix this. People have been begging for this for years. It is a major problem that nearly renders the path tool useless. Maybe we should try a class action lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act if Adobe won't get their heads out of their posteriors on this issue. Not everyone has the eyes of a 20 year old and the size of a pixel on modern displays is just too small to discern grey on grey in a quick and easy manner.
If the problem is only because of Mac OpenGL then I say screw them. Let us Win users have a functional path tool and the Mac people can suffer or switch systems. Apple's sales figures aren't Adobe's concern.

See my comment above: there is a very easy workaround that doesn't require Adobe to actually write good software.
THE FIX: draw your path using the pen tool as a shape layer. You can then specify the color for the path, and you can also change the path weight as needed.

That's a decent fix if you are using the path as a selection tool but not so much if you are using it as a drawing tool since you can't just stroke path, move path, stroke path, etc.
And if this is fundamentally a mac problem I shouldn't have to deal with their BS because I'm smart enough to not buy their machines.

You are off topic. This is a forum relating to a Photoshop issue. Your Corel Paint question should be something you ask people on a forum specificly for Corel. I mean really who even uses Corel for photo editing? That program is a joke and its files are a real pain to deal with in the printing industry.
Adobe doesn't care. 7 years of complaints on the same issue, no change. And wasn't going to the subscription model supposed to mean faster fixes??? Ha ha ha on all you customers. THEY DO NOT CARE.
Interesting Comment. I have been using Photoshop since the first version came on the market. Postscript printers was only an idea. Adobe had big ideas and invested time and money to give customer what they wanted. They cared back then. I have to admit I agree with you. Adobe does not care about you now. They do what they need to so the money will keep pouring in. But they have pissed a lot of users off with the rent forever and never own your software. I have doubled down on quite a few new software programs that will replace my need for Adobe products. Such as Affinity Photo. its very close to what photoshop can do. For must users has all they will need. On1 Photo 10 is great and gets better with each version. So we as users still have options. Maybe one day Adobe will wake up. But me, I will have moved on by then and will not be looking back.

• none of them want to be connected to bad software – and not only to avoid embarrassment in possible future job interviews
• given the choice between doing good work and bad work they prefer the first
• many are users of the software themselves (rant: though with some teams’ members it seems difficult to imagine and I am not thinking of Photoshop in this case) and therefore benefit from improvements themselves
• they do not want to be thought of badly

There's nothing for them to really strive for now other than getting new, non-professional customers. With no competition there's no need to advance. They seem to have made a choice to relegate their pro customers to a lower priority and go after temporary, casual users and trends.
All industries have some form of competition except this one. Companies need competition, some call-to-action requiring them to engage in critical and creative thinking otherwise innovation and initiative dry up. If it's not about making their customers more happy with their products then it's simply to win sales from the competition. But either of these reasons require listening to and truly appreciating customer feedback and implementing useful features that aren't decreed from a marketing team.
Then there's the whole subscription software thing, another reason for them to lack any initiative. There used to have to be compelling reasons for people to buy upgrades, it had to be worth the cost. Now, why bother? Why compete against yourself? The subscription software model compounded by a lack of competition means Adobe becomes apathetic and stagnant. Anyone could have seen this coming.

Six years after this has been requested, and still no suitable upgrade for one of the core tools in Photoshop. Incredibly disappointing.

There are so many small usability requests that would immediately help are large portion of PS professional retouchers but so little is done. I honestly cannot recall any big improvement over the last few years - other than incrementally getting the UI slightly back to a more usable state.
Can we just finally say that the move to CC subscription has pretty much brought development and JDI fixes to a halt in PS compared to the pre subscription model. I recall many of us were worried that the CC model would stifle incentive to add new features and fix or improve others - now that certainly seems to be the case.

For example while I do not consider Face-Aware Liquify of great benefit to me personally it looks like some nifty programming.

Quite a lot of new features - that are questionable or useless to many photographers and photo retouchers. And no I do not consider most Adobe "magic" or "smart" or "aware-this" to actually work in for professional demands. Making the path readable with a user defined color stroke (like it was pre CS5) or (my #1 need) adding more grid lines and save and load mesh to warping would really help a lot of retouchers.

Of course - multiple times. My take on it is adding Bezier curves warping like you are using the path tool and have it inside something like Liquify so you can save and load meshes.
I do not use Illustrator nor do I own (rent) it. If similar features are available in a sibling application - why should it be so difficult to add to PS?

While something working in one application certainly proves that it is possible to achieve it may not be at all easy to transfer the functionality into another application that has a different code-base (not sure that term is correct here, though).
And adding or improving or even fixing any feature should mean an expenditure of resources in coding and testing, so I guess there is something like a »natural inertia« to overcome each time.
I would welcome an improvement of Photoshop’s Warp functionality but I think I understand why it may not happen any time soon ...
