Photoshop: create a Pattern Manipulation Tool

My idea is too have a dedicated tool for manipulating patterns. The tool would be an extension of the marquee tool in that you would select an area on the canvas and by simply grabbing and dragging the corners the new selection area will be tiled with the original selection.

This tool would compliment the existing menu option of defining a pattern in that it would actually allow you to experiment and preview your pattern before committing to saving it.

My second idea is to create a Smart Pattern Layer. This layer would remember your original selection area and when this area is updated, areas that have been filled with this pattern would automatically get updated.

This is my blog post about the concept:

Thank you.

The first part of your request seems a good idea for improving pattern creation.

This does not seem so good to me – it sounds much too complex as a Layer would have to keep a link to a part of another Layer.

The idea was to have the option of creating a smart pattern layer, not it being the default.

But I do agree, the first idea would be more than enough on its own for speeding up pattern creation.

Thanks for your feedback.
