first of all check whether - for no reason - you are connected to your catalogue. you will find that in menue "file" (first on the menue-bar) next you should move your mouse to the folder (withing LR Classic on the left), click on the right button of yr mouse (in Windows) and click on the "synchronize folders" command. then LR should rebuild the folder-structure and all pictures should be back after LR has rebuilt the archive. How it works in Mac, I have no idea. However, should you have lost all yr pics due a crash of yr hard-drive yr images might be lost - unless you have a safe backup

No, do use Folder > Synchronize. We do not yet know what the OP's problem is - let's diagnose the problem before suggesting a solution.

John meant to say "do NOT use it" and I agree. Synchronize Folder is an import method. That means that all photos that get added through this option are imported as new, and so you will lose all edits and added metadata. One has to be really sure what is going on before suggesting this as a solution.

The most common explanation for your problem is that you have started a new catalogue. So let's see if there is another catalogue. When you go to the File menu and choose File > Open Recent, is anything listed there?
Secondly, from the Help menu, use Help > System Info. Copy the first line and paste it here, so we know exactly what version of Lightroom you are using.
And do you backup your catalogues?
