When I drag a layer using the move tool on the document the whole group moves. How do I just move just a single layer inside a group?

You have the Move to set to "Auto-Select" groups.

Select the Move tool and change the setting to Layer instead of Group in the tool options bar:

I had a related issue, when i tried to move a layer it was like the whole black channel moved instead. Down near the bottom of the tool bar in CS3 there is a setting for Edit in Quick Mask Mode. I had accidentally clicked on that. It's a little rectangle with a circle in it.
