I wonder whether it would be possible to implement a variable feather mask option. I'm looking for the solution found in some color grading and rotoscoping softwares, where the user can create a bezier based path, then offset it either insde or outside or both sides thus creating a region of feather.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Mask Feather Tool for Photoshop.

For quite a while I have been thinking that there should be a possibility in PS to adjust the feathering of a path/selection in a better way.

Recently the Mask Feather Tool has been introduced for After Effects.
It's an easy way to have a mask with different amounts of feathering.

Of course it is possible to traditionally paint masks using the brushes but i believe it's a more intuitive way of doing so.

You can have a hard edge on one portion of the mask while feathering it out on another part.
