Since you can control the brush size by holding alt/control drag with the pen, there should be something equivalent for brush ROTATION as well.

If you have a Wacom tablet and the art tip pen you can control pen rotation that way.

That's a very cool Intuos feature that I can't imagine how I'd ever use in real life. ;P

Most importantly to me, when I'm rotating a healing brush, I'm usually doing some precision repair work, and will most likely switch to the mouse to keep my overly caffeinated hand shake out of the equation.

This is not true.
It's not a default on the Intuos 4 and there isn't a hot key to map it.

It is true - the ArtPen rotates the brush quite naturally.
He didn't say anything about a hot key.

Ok then. You guys are just saying there is way, but not stating how you do it. Do you even know? So how do you visually control and change the brush rotation/orientation on the fly while drawing/painting?

You physically turn the pen in your hand on the tablet to rotate the tip.

right. exactly what I thought you were talking about. It's pointless. Many people who paint want to precisely see and set the brush angle on the fly before they but they make the stroke.
For example, I use an elongated brush and I want to specifically rotate it 10 degrees without going into the Brush Panel. Turning the brush tip does not achieve this. Kind of like how the hokey works for brush size- I hold down a key, and drag to change the brush size- then paint. Its a fluid workflow. Rotation should work the same way.

HOW ABOUT a feature when you can orient the angle of brush.stamp.etc without opening the panel where you have all the option? It would help for a fast workflow. For example when using the smudge tool to create hair.To keep the orientation for the hair direction you have to open the brush panel every time the orientation change its angle. It can be a shortcut like Space+R.

exactly. the same way that you can change the brush size by holding a hotkey and dragging, you should be able to hold a hotkey and drag to rotate the angle of the brush without opening the panel. It should really be a shortcut like ctrl something in that area, since brush size is ctrl-alt or at least a way to edit the hotkey.

I love using control+option to change brush size on the fly, but I think it'd be even cooler if you could add the shift key to rotate the brush with live visual feedback (especially for clone and heal tools).

I'd love to have this as well!

There are the hotkeys SHIFT+OPTION+> and < but the speed/increment is too tiny.

At a minimum I'd love to see a preference to control the increment so that I can map the key stroke to my tablet's touch strip/ring to quickly rotate interactively.

I would definitely use this feature to rotate a brush as I am painting...just like in real life. Artist always shift and rotate the brush almost every time a stroke is created. The engineers need to pick up a real brush and paint so they can understand what we need.

This is so needed feature, i have no idea how many votes it needs to get in, but I can imagine there are so many people like me, who don't know about this voting. Otherwise it would get at least thousand.

Add my vote. Today I searched in vain any working solution. I wish I could set my brush angle with Wacom scroll wheel. Please Adobe!

This is apparently an old thread, but I've been searching for a keystroke combination I can assign to an F key, or to my Wacom Intuos to change the brush angle without having to open the separate palette every time.

I agree, Clayton. I wish there was a hot-key solution as I am still not very proficient with the Wacom Pen. Rotation, like others have said, would be a very nice feature.

warning, bit of rant mixed in:

the general brush settings need a huge overhaul and loads more customization and hotkeyability. general brush management and brush preset modification is prehistoric and terrible but theres other threads for that.

the art pen is very clumsy and the tip of the pen body is too thick even if you strip all the rubber and grind off most of the front plastic, still cant fully utilize tilt then, and the nib has alot of play to it that i didnt mange to diy stabilize compared to grip/pro pen, especially if using the regular nibs and not the proper art pen ones, which are clumsy for precision drawing, impossible to do precision stuff for me and make it feel like a pencil no matter what i do to it, there is also huge data problems with it, either lag or slow update rate which makes quick faded out stroke ends not register compared to the pro/grip pen (on cintiq 13hd and intuos4 at least, the tech suport confirmed it for me, too much data apparently because of the added rotation), also if you make a huge thin brush (whole screen size) and observe how it behaves if you just hold the pen without rotating, just move very slightly, it will rotate quite abit on its own, its very unprecise (i tried few of them, all the same).  so i found it impossible to do precision drawing with it, especially when caffeinated (as someone already mentioned here), its very triggering and no matter how much i was looking forward to getting one, once i got it i actualy never used it because of all that

the hotkey system needs an overhaul, allow us to control rotation, then we'll find a way to bind it to a midi controller rotary knob or something, allow us to create per brush hotkeys without having to create actions to select brushes,  stuff like that, workflow speed and brush+hotkey customizability. take a deep look at manga studio and take notes about brush customizability and potential workflow speed cap. and then add your sick tech on top of that and ill never need to open manga studio again

some edits

There is also this other topic: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/rotate_brush_tip_on_the_fly?topic-reply-list[... I'm wary to merge it, as the feedback of this thread would be lost. I hope that all voters here also voiced their concerns in that thread.

it's amazing that this option is still not implemented, may be CTRL +
Left Mouse button = brush rotate

Currently I'm using a script I made as a shortcut to increment and decrement the brush angle with F1 and F2. I'm planning to create a widget so you can change the angle by dragging from the widget. You can follow can me on twitter @patrickdeen if you're interested.

It looks like people will have to keep this thread active so it garners enough votes. I'm sure with so many of us using brushes in PS, this would be very welcome.

please yes this is the  #1 thing slowing me down. well this and slow LR presets.

i would use rotate key even more than size change. I am always using the size hotkeys when I really only need to rotate..... because I'd rather use a different part of a huge curved brush to get a different angle than have to deal with the horrid procedure for rotating the brush. Only works sometimes though. Not a real solution. keep us posted

This would be such a huge help.  For retouching, being able to change the brush angle on the fly would make such a huge difference, especially when working on hair.  The current interface is insane.
