The files are probably corrupted. Do JPGs have the problem or only NEFs?

Have you used Nikon Transfer or ViewNX to look at the files? If those Nikon programs are for an older camera model they can corrupt files for newer cameras as far as Adobe software is concerned. If you are using old Nikon software to copy or view the files, try copying a few NEFs photos without using any Nikon software and see if those work ok.

If these new images copies without using Nikon software don't work, then there is probably something wrong with the card or usb port or card-reader or even camera and the data is getting corrupted during the writing to the card or the copying from the card.

If you want you can upload one of these photos to www.dropbox.com and post a public download link, here, to have others test to see if they can tell what the problem might be, whether the files are corrupted for them or not.

Hi Steve, I looked at the problem with fresh eye's after reading your reply above, it turns out that the photographer had not formatted his card in the new camera (Nikon D7100) which was problem one, and problem two was the Nikon Transfer, I was able to open Nefs after formatting the cards and updating the Nikon software, however; the original photographs taken using the unformatted cards can't still be opened in any Adobe products, yet they can be opened in Capture NX2 so at least I can edit the important ones for him.
Thanks for the good advice.
