Photoshop: Randomly changes selected layer upon move

Photoshop randomly deselects a selected layer and selects a different, undesired layer or group upon attempting to drag a layer with move tool. WTH? In a fairly large project with about 25-35 layers, I will select a layer in the layer pallet and then attempt to drag and drop with the move tool but as soon as I click on the object, the layer randomly changes to another layer or selects the whole group in the layer pallet and moves the wrong layer. Its very annoying and random; I'm to the point that I have to either Nudge it for 3 miles or Free Transform before I can drag a layer object to a new spot in the project.

I'll bet you have auto select turned on in the move tool, and your click is actually clicking on the layer that gets selected.

Which version of Photoshop are you using?
Have you installed all the updates?
And if you have third party plugins installed, have you tried disabling them?

If, as seems possible, Mr.Cox has pointed you to the source of your problem (and how you can turn the behaviour off should then be obvious) the polite thing to do would be to acknowledge that and mark the thread as answered.
