As of Photoshop CS4, filters can now be applied to Smart Objects as Smart Filters which allow users to reedit the filters settings, mask the filter effect, adjust the filter effects blend mode and opacity, and enable/disable the visibility of each filter effect.

Dear Adobe Gripe #998

"Use the Effects panel of After Effects with Photoshop. It'd be nice to just switch filters on and off instead of applying them permanently"
