Photoshop: Luminosity mode for magic wand tool

(This is the third try posting this item. If this is posted, then the forum was down recently or browser problems are preventing some items from being posted.)

When adjusting shadows with a layer mask, selecting the shadow areas with the magic wand requires clicking in multiple colors even if they are similarly dark. For instance, in an image with dark red and dark green areas two separate clicks are needed to get them both.

It would be very helpful if the magic wand had a "Luminosity" mode checkbox that ignored the color when selecting. This would greatly speed up making a mask of shadow areas and/or excluding unwanted highlight areas from the mask. Right now, the only workaround for complex shadows with multiple colors is to convert the image to Lab and select from the L channel.

How about the work-around of using the Adjustment Layer’s Blend If-settings set to »Gray« for Underlying Layer?
