Photoshop Elements 8 will not save newly processed images as jpegs. Creates a Window Shell file type not recognized.

Running W7Pro-64 bit on new computer. Has worked correctly until yesterday when about 50 scanned/processed images were supposedly saved in a designated folder as jpegs. When I went to open them, the icon attributed to them was a blank page identified in properties as "windows shell file". Elements 8--the program that saved them would not recognize them. The file type shown in properties was actually the file name I had given each image as I saved it. I typed the file name in the correct window with the file type correctly showing as "jpeg". The only way I discovered to correct this issue was to assign the only program that would recognize them (Windows Paint) and then re-save each one as a jpeg in "Paint", giving each a new name. I then deleted the originals. Today I've had the same problem as I've been scanning, processing and saving 35mm slides as jpegs. Some were saved correctly...about half of them were not. I can no longer trust Elements 8 as my only photo processing software.

When you scan images, Photoshop Elements merely acts as a gateway to your scanner. It is your scanner that is creating the files and naming them (Photoshop Elements is in no way involved in this process). Try scanning with the native scanning software outside of Photoshop Elements and see if the behavior is any different. Likely, what you need to do to resolve this issue is update your scanner drivers and possible reset the scanners preferences.

Photoshop Elements 8 (PE8) has stopped being able to save anything. I open an image, try to save as .psd and get an error, "Could not complete your request because of a program error." I tried saving to the current folder, to c:\data (close to root), closing and opening the program, rebooting, etc.

I read somewhere that I should delete the profile file but I can not find it, mainly because Windows 7 does not grant me access to system files. My PE8 software is up to date when I check for updates.

Environment: Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Core Quad CPU, 2.5 GHz, 8 GB memory, 64 bit operating system.

Do you have another drive to attempt saving to? If not, have you tired saving to your desktop? Have you tried saving as a different format?

I'm not sure what you mean about deleting the profile. You should try recreating the preferences though. Hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift when launching the Editor. If you get the timing right you will be asked if you want to delete the settings file, do so.
