Elements: Can you copy/paste from an external source?

Photoshop Elements: I can't copy/paste text or images from an external program. If I copy/paste a few times, the program suddenly decides not to paste any data (text or images) from an external source like pdf or Word anymore. At first it will, but after a few times it just copy/pastes text or other data copied from an open photoshop file. What can I do?
(I use Photoshop Elements 10 on Windows 7, I do not use any clipboard managers, or other exotic programs)

The PSE10 Editor's File...New...Image From Clipboard is buggy as h*.

I use OneNote's screen capture to copy an area to the Clipboard, and it usually takes two tries (of the screen capture) for PSE to recognize the data in the Clipboard.

This is on Win7 x64.

If you have Microsoft Office installed, then you have a clipboard manager installed (there is one that comes as part of the Office suite). You may want to purge the clipboard when you run into this kind of issue, likely if you are copying/pasting a bunch the data here is becoming corrupted. In Elements you can go to Edit > Clear > Clipboard Contents. You can also try doing similar steps from Office applications.

Although purging the clipboard might help, it's quicker to simply use OneNote's screen capture again.

This is another one of those intermittent problems. It'll randomly fail, then work OK a few times (and I'm pleasantly surprised).

Cut and Paste in Photoshop Elements have greyed out. They used to work. I can't figure out how to Clear Clipboard. There is no option for this in Elements or Word. I do have Microsoft Office installed, but can't find anything there, either.

Restarting the computer will also clear the clipboard.

Just to make sure we are perfectly clear about the behavior: you currently have an area of the image selected (using one of the selection tools) and the copy and cut commands are still greyed out? Paste will not be available until you have something in the clipboard.

Which selection tool are you using? What type of layer is currently selected? A screen shot would be a big help.

I'm not using layers. Just the jpg file I uploaded from my scanner. Is this what you want to see? Do you need me to send a screen shot in Word, or how/what? I'd never had a problem with copy/paste until recently.

A screen shot should include the entire display, so we can see the tool selected, the layers palette, etc.

I don't know how to upload a screen shot. I only know how to paste a screen shot into Word, and this Reply does not allow .doc files.

Here is what I'm talking about. In this first image, we can see that Copy and Cut are greyed out. But when we look at the image behind that, nothing is selected (no marching ants). But my Background layer is currently selected in the Layers panel on the right.

In this image, Copy and Cut are available because I've used the Marquee tool to select a portion of the images that I want to copy.

Are you doing the same?

I'm confused by your screen shots. On my screen in Photoshop Elements, I don't see anything in the righthand column that says "Layers." I see a long list of things, the three at the top in order being Brightness and Contrast, Correct Skin Tones, and Crop Photo, plus a bunch more.

I am doing what I always have done -- pull up my image; Select All; and then attempt to Copy (and paste elsewhere) which are greyed out. I don't play around with layers. I keep it very simple. The way I have always done it is not working.

You see the different list than me because you are in the Guided edit mode, while I am in the Expert edit mode. You can't cut and copy in Guided edit mode because you don't have access to any of the tool to make a selection with. At the top middle of the application , just below the menu bar, you can see "Quick | Guided | Expert". Click on Expert, that should get you back to normal.

I wish there were a way to talk this over on the phone with you (or someone). Then, you could, with my permission, enter my computer so you could see what I see. This online chat is good, but phone support would be much better, UNLESS you can enter my computer somehow from where you are?

HOW TO PASTE FROM MICROSOFT WORD USING ELEMENTS 12!

In Elements, click on “Expert” (top menu)

Go to MS Word and copy the photo or picture to get it into the clipboard
Back in Elements:
1- File/New/Image from Clipboard OR Open/New Image from Clipboard
2- If you want to crop it use the crop tool at lower right. Click the green check mark when done cropping
3- To save: File/Save then type in name. Change the format to “Jpeg” & “SAVE”.
4- It brings up one more menu box – I just hit “OK”
5- Then your “untitled” photos will have to be closed out – can’t figure out how to prevent those but each time you save you leave behind the same photo as an untitled file.
