Photoshop Elements: Crashes very often

I have 6 Gb of ram and a fast PC. I am running Windows Vista SP2 64 bit. I bought Photoshop Elements 10 three days ago. It crashes when you are well into editing a photo. It gives an error message saying it has stopped working. This happens very often. Apparently it is a common problem because I see other complaints about the same error. When will Adobe fix this?? Photoshop Elements 7 has run well on this PC for two years.

Which is crashing: the editor or the organizer?

And what does the crash report say is the name of the faulting module?

The editor crashes. There is a large number of users reporting the same problem it appears. When it crashes I get and error message saying it is shutting down and then the screen fades away.

Do you get an error when you try to reload the application? Whatever is preventing it from reloading could be tied to what was preventing it from running correctly in the first place. Then again, perhaps the application wasn't removed correctly (again, this could be connected to what was causing the crashes in the first place). Likely root causes: user permissions or interfering background applications.

Check to make sure the application folder has been deleted (location depends on OS). More cleanup work may be required, but you haven't given us enough information yet Gary.

Thank you for answering. When I try to reload the drive sounds like it is reading the files. After a few minutes it goes quiet, but nothing happens. It does not show anything on the screen.
Before I started haveing problems, I had a message to update Inspiration browser. I did this but it loaded outside the program. When I tried to drag it over to PSE, I got a message that the files were not supported.
I went into control panel then went to remove program then selected PSE 9.
I don't know what application folder, or OS mean.
Thanks again.

So the disk is not auto-playing. Can you go to (My) Computer and open the disk and manually run the setup.exe?
Inspiration Browser is another application, it does not run inside of Photoshop Elements, but externally. As it is an EXE file, it cannot be opened in PSE (hence the "not supported" error message).

Application folder is the folder where all of your applications/programs/software are installed. OS means Operating System, which is a question of Mac or Windows, and which version.

I have no third party plugins. I use the basic program. The only change I made was installing Photoshop Elements 10. Photoshop Elements 7, in a different folder, runs fine. I have removed Phototshop Elements 10, restarted my PC and reinstalled it. The same problem exists. I have Windows Vista auto-update activated, so it stayed updated. I haven't tried to print a photo or change anything about my PC. I am not very familiar with the logs, but I show no hardware errors at all and nothing I can see labeled Photoshop or Adobe. It doesn't crash on every photo or every edit, but does crash several times during each editing period.

I have found another problem now with the software. I edited two photos and changed the depth of field on each. After I saved the copies, I can not open them with any photo software. The error says it can't open the picture due to an invalid JPEG marker. I have never had any of these problems with previous versions of PSE on this PC.

Getting an "invalid JPEG marker" error generally means that the file is not actually a JPEG. It means it was saved as a PSD, TIFF, GIF or some other format but has ".JPG" at the end of the file name. So applications treat the file like a JPEG, but file does not carry JPEG information, hence the error.

Try renaming the file to a different format, such as PSD (the default Photoshop format), see if the file opens then (at least in applications that support the PSD format). There is the possibility it is another format, any format, but PSD is the most likely.

I have also discovered that a crash happens most frequently when using the Depth of Field tool and blurring the backround. This time it said "Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

The faulting module in this error is StackHash_fd00. Don't know much about it (it's not ours), but checking out the internet I've come across a couple different plausible scenarios:
1. There is a driver conflict. Please make sure standard device drivers are updated (from the manufacturer's web site). Especially the Display (video card) and the printer.
2. A virus. Scan your system for any possible viruses.

I have used Photoshop and Photoshop Elements for years, but Photoshop Elements 10 has very little to offer over even Photoshop Elements 7. The "People Recognition" feature is particularly disappointing and a real joke, in my opinion. First of all it fails to recognize a face many times. I have taken 3 nearly identical photos of the same person and it recognized a face in only one of them. In a photo of Ted Nugent it finds two faces, his and the area where his beard is located. You must tag every photo of the same person that it finds. Picasa 3, a free program, when it learns a face, finds every photo of that person on your PC without further intervention. I have 6 Gb of memory in my PC and it has a very fast processor. Several times in the few days I have had Photoshop Elements 10, it has just put up an error message saying it is shutting down for no apparent reason. I am not very happy with this product, If I could get my money back, I would return to using my previous version. The two additional DVDs that came with it and the primary DVD are not even labeled with what they contain. There are several other problems with it, but I have covered enough of them.

Photoshop Elements 10: "People Finder" is not working well.

Just for curiousity. Try installing CoreTemp and see what happens to your RAM, CPU temps and CPU load while running the Organizer in Elements10. If didn't crash, but that one exe took all the RAM it could find (14Gb of 16Gb) and wouldn't release it, and the CPU temp increased noticeably.

I used Photoshop Elements 5 for years. When I upgraded to Elements 7 I too experienced constant crashes. I was about ready to un-install and go back to 5, but I decided to try changing the compatability settings on my Windows 7 computer. When I changed the settings on Elements to Run As Administrator and Run in XP with Svc Pk 2, the program has run flawlessly. I also have all my 3rd party Photoshop Actions that also run fine now. It seems that changing the compatability settings solved all my problems. It's worth a shot for you to try too. The software has a lot more features than my prior version, and I really enjoy it now that it's not crashing all the time. Hope this helps.

I will try this, for I have the same kind of problems with Elements 7 - I all but didn't use it anymore on my old laptop (vista) and on Window 7 , Elements 7 will freeze continually - mostly, it 'defreezes' after a while, but it is extremely frustrating!

What are you doing when the application freezes? Does it freeze on launch and then unfreeze after a bit? Or are you trying to complete a specific task when it freezes?
