PhotoShop Editor loses it's connection to Photoshop Organizer 10, then it will not allow you to save project/photo that was originally launched from PhotoShop Organizer. It instructs you to open organizer and create a new catalog, even though organizer is already running, and shows the photo is being edited in Photoshop
Elements Editor (can't save, save as or copy project being worked on with the editor), program either eventually crashes, or must be terminated with the result all work done on the photo is lost. Was using Enhance=>Adjust Color=>Replace Color, and Magic Extractor when problem occurs while trying to save or save as results. Does not occur all of the time, but when it happens, problem is not discovered until you are trying to save your work, it won't even allow copy the edited photo to the clipboard. Did not have this problem with Photoshop Elements 8.

A "connection" to the Organizer should not be required to work in the Editor. You should be able to save files in the Editor without the Organizer open, even if the files where opened from the Organizer. It may need a connection to the Organizer catalog if you are saving your images in a version set or adding them to the catalog.

This may be just some sort of crash with in the Editor and have nothing to do with the Organizer. Could you post an screenshot of the error you see? Do you get the error when click on File>Save/Save As, or after clicking the Save button inside the Save As dialog?
