Photoshop CS6 hangs after a few commands.

Photoshop CS6 (V13.0) repeatedly hangs after I do a few simple commands... maybe after only one, like opening a file and simply selecting the clone or crop tool. I have to use the task manager to kill Photoshop and restart.

I am running Windows 7 on a Dell Precision. I have run CS6 since about the day it came out. At first, no problems. About a month ago I started getting occasional hangs when I did text operations. Now for the past couple days Photoshop CS6 crashes (hangs) very frequently and very quickly.

I started CS6 with a click and cleared my preferences. But that didn't stop the hanging.

Is there a configuration/cache file somewhere I can delete? I suspect bad data somewhere that keeps cropping up, since the program did work for quite a while without a problem.

One other anomaly: I ran the Adobe app manager this afternoon because I saw that V13.1 was released today. App manager updated itself but said the updates to Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop Extended failed. The message suggested that I reboot to complete the installation. I rebooted, and restarted Photoshop. Photoshop still says that it's version 13.0, and when I run the app manager now, app manager says that I am on the latest version.

What happened to V13.1?

Did you get an error code with the update failure?

I don't recall seeing an error code. The Adobe application manager seemed to imply that it couldn't complete the installation because a file was in use or something which a reboot would clear. But, I'm still at V13.0 and now the Application Manager says, "You applications are all up-to-date as checked: less than a minute ago."

I'll do the manual download, I guess!

I have installed V13.1. I opened a .psd file, cropped, and saved for web. Then I clicked on the text tool and Photoshop stopped responding and Windows killed it.

Can you reproduce that crash again?

Just to be sure, make sure since you're on windows that you have the latest video card driver for your video card.

Hi, Pete.

There is no actual crash, instead the application is marked as "Not responding" and will stay that way forever. Sometimes Windows will note that the application is not responding and says it's searching for a solution (... and then kills Photoshop). Other times I have to manually kill the process in Task Manager.

I don't think either method produces a crash dump to forward, does it?

I will double-check the video driver, but why would CS6 acquire this problem when it didn't exist a while ago? The shelf live of software is usually pretty long. That's why I am wondering if there is another cache or configuration file somewhere that is corrupted. That, I'll do the handwaving fix of uninstall and reinstall. If any those work, I'll report on that here tomorrow.

On Friday, I uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop CS6. I also asked Windows to check for a new video driver. Windows 7 said it was checking my system and the Internet for a new video driver, and then Windows reported that I was current.

The problem reoccurred. I decided to go to the NVIDIA website myself and confirm that I had the most recent driver. A new driver had been posted last week.

I downloaded the new driver, installed it, and I haven't had a Photoshop crash since.

Why did this start happening now? Who knows. That's why I love computers.

Anyway, it doesn't seem to be a Photoshop issue. Thanks, Pete, for your help.

Check the GPU makers's website, never Microsoft.

Microsoft updates their drivers every few years.

I am having this problem now, and added my dropdown boxes are offset on top of it I am downloading a new driver as I am writing this hope it works for me too.

Hi Galen,

Good to hear about the new video driver fixing the crashes. Nice job updating the card.

Hard to tell why the driver started to have a problem when it was working previously. Good to have the latest driver for your display card though.

I'm using HP probook 450 G3, My adobe photoshop CS6 also hanged several time after saving or at the middle of the work.
