Photoshop CS5: Color swatches don't fit properly when docked with layers palette. You can see the color pattern being scattered [screenshot 1]. This is due to the minimum width of the layers palette being too wide. Currently, I have to workaround this with some customization [screenshot 2]. Can this problem be fixed in the future?

Interesting side note, this only happens on Windows. On Mac, the swatches display as you would like.

Comparing overlapping screen shots, the culprit turns out to be the drop-down box for the Opacity setting. This may be part of the Windows API for drop-down boxes and may be something we have no control over. We may only be able to find a solution by reducing the size of the text for the Opacity Label or increasing the size of the Swatch icons.

Which would be preferable?

i suggest to fix it by reducing the width of the layers mode drop down and removing the excess space to the right of the opacity drop down

And it is still the Layers panel's fault. Unfortunately, on Windows, the minimum width of the Layers panel is slightly bigger than what would make the Swatches panel display pleasantly for you. If you don't nest the Swatches panel with the Layers panel, then Swatches can be resized to display the way you like. So if you break either Swatches or Layers away from the same column, things can be displayed better.

Windows users say that was never a problem before photoshop cs4, so what changed?

Brett,

Did you mean the dropdown for the layer blending modes?

Someone at work said if you don't mind setting the windows theme to basic and reducing the size of the scrollbar to 14, then the swatches display as they should.

Example from photoshop cs5 on windows 7:
