Photoshop: CS5.5 Win7 64 bit - Copy/paste - Pasting the clipboard stops working

After installing PS CS5, screenshots failed to paste into Photoshop. They were definitely on the clipboard and would paste correctly into other apps.

Google turned up http://forums.adobe.com/message/3127467 where the problem was left unsolved.

Googling a bit more led to the following instructions http://www.atlanticbt.com/blog/adobe-...:

In Windows, go to Start and then Run.
Type in “Regedit” without the quotes
Once in the registry editor, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Adobe > Photoshop > 55.0 (This is PS CS5.5)
Right-click on the 11.0 folder and select New > DWORD and name it “AlwaysImportClipboard” without the quotes
Double click the name and change the Value Data field from 0 to 1
Restart Photoshop and paste away!

This worked Chris Cox or others, does this help?

If "always import" works, that does tell us something -- that Windows isn't notifying Photoshop of changes to the clipboard like it's supposed to. The data is there, but Windows has an API to tell the application that the data has changed, and we're not seeing that notification.

We've seen third party plugins cause that, and some external applications that mess up Windows clipboard handling (including some odd ones like JDownloader).

But we've never been able to track down any other causes, even though we suspect that there might be additional problems.

Thanks Chris. I noticed other threads with similar comments. I'm now less confident of the registry hack, but removing the Nik Silver Efex 2 restores normal paste behaviour.

Ok, so you did have a bug in a third party plugin. Check with Nik and see if they have an update.

They are supposed to be close to releasing an update that fixes a nasty bug that garbles keywords and even prevents LR 3.5RC from writing any metadata back to SFX2-processed Tif files.

Since downloading Photoshop CS 5 12.1x64, I have been having a problem taking screen shots. I can take a screen shot, paste it into Photoshop and be just fine. However, when I take another print screen shot and attempt to past it into Photoshop it pastes the previous screen shot. I opened MS paint and ran the test and it pastes the new screen shot so I know it is not a clip board error.

After doing research it seems many people had this problem back with CS 2 and CS 3. I cannot find a solution to this problem. Even restarting my machine does not help, I can still only grab one screenshot and paste it into PS.

A solution would be great as I am trying to write a book and this is a serious limiting factor. Thanks.

An old thread, I know....

But I have found a workaround. When you have merqueed an area of your image to copy/ paste and that does not work anymore just use the brush tool, paint someting, undo it an then copy/ paste works again.
Strange...

Works on my Windows 7-x64 Adobe Photoshop CS5 installation!!!

In my case, that was:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Adobe > Photoshop > 12.0

Just added AlwaysImportClipboard as a DWORD with a value of 1.

Thanks, thanks, thanks!!!!

Update: Although it works, Photoshop CS5 does have issues pasting a .png with a transparent background. Must save that as a file first. . . . :(

Err, let me take that glowing response back. More testing shows that:

1) It's still not working all that reliably.
2) When pasting a transparent .png, it often than not ends up black.

Whether or not another Windows notifies Photoshop of changes or another program interferes with the clipboard as Chris Cox mentions above, pasting into MSPAINT *still works*.Therefore, as far as I'm concerned, so should Photoshop.

You would think that after all these years, that Adobe Photoshop would at least be as good at cutting and pasting graphic images as the lowly MSPAINT. Apparently not.

PS, feel free to change my icon to 'Not happy'.

10/26/2014 - doesn't work at all on win7x64sp1 i7-3970x 64GiB psexCS5 12.0x64.
1.start ps.
2. hit print screen
3.edit, paste (grayed out)

cs5 has been EOL'd. wonder if this has anything to do with it. I see no NIK plugins anywhere and don't remember installing any.
manual and AAM updates don't work anymore.
I have had this product 4 years. master collection cs5 is not a subscription and not supposed to expire to my knowledge.
registry change didn't do anything, assumed I had to close and restart ps since many programs only read the registry at startup, but this did nothing.

did not help. nearly every menu item is grayed out.
this looked interesting: http://superuser.com/questions/280225...
but still didn't solve problem.

article about why it's not a good idea to have your own clipboard & rely on clipboard notifications.

Nope, the author has no idea what is happening inside Photoshop.
We have debugged this issue, and found that the OS stops notifying Photoshop of changes to the clipboard. Even if we always enable paste, we still get stale contents from the OS clipboard (which is why "always import" doesn't work). We have demonstrated this to Microsoft, but still do not have a fix.

I know this thread dates back a bit but I have similar issues that drive me mad. Im an occasional User of Photoshop CS 5.5. if my pc is on for a few days Photo shop suddenly stops pasting, wont allow me to create new images and wont open images for edit, when i dbl clicked (just get a Photoshop with nothing in it)

I have built a few pcs and same issue on all of them. once it starts only option to get functionality is re-boot. I use win 7 pro with 8 gig so should not be an issue.
