Photoshop: Drop Shadow Problem

I have a background layer with just a color in it, and above it there is a torn paper effect by having a layer with a paper texture have a layer mask that has ragged edges cut down the sides. The strip of paper layer has a drop shadow on it.

The problem:
The shadow appears on the side of the paper layer, and also down the sides of the document, even though there is no content in the mask, or any pixels to make it show up. What's more, when you print, the shadow down the sides of the document doesn't show. Also, if you place the document in illustrator it doesn't show. You can even turn the layer on and off, and sometimes it shows, sometimes it doesn't. Zooming also seems to affect whether it shows or not. Clearly there's some kind of programming/display issue here. The correct behavior is not showing it, obviously.
