Photoshop CS4 Freezing/Locking Up:

I'm editing 5DMarkII raw files and jpegs full size

This is what triggers the freeze: open a jpeg, create a new empty layer, fill with black, render lens flare, set to screen, add a solid color adjustment layer, lower opacity, run guassian blur on the black lens flare layer, then try to open a raw file....when I try to open the raw file, things freeze up....happens every time

I posted this problem in the adobe community support forums and another user, with completely different hardware components but also testing with CS4, was able to reproduce this problem. I believe this is a problem in the Photoshop program code.

Looking at the windows event viewer, the error code indicates a Cross-Thread Deadlock

I'm running an AMD 1090T cpu, 16gb of Corsair Vengence Ram, Nvidia GTX465 video card, and Windows 7 64bit

I posted this on the community forums here as well: http://forums.adobe.com/message/36926...

Have you updated ACR (Camera Raw)?

Hi Chris,

Yes I have version 5.7

I've downloaded CS5 trial version and did the same steps that freezes up CS4. On CS5, I get no lock ups. So I know it's not anything with my computer.

Received this from another photographer friend...I've also tried this with a small resolution file but it doesn't matter, it still locks up

Nathan,
Just for kicks I tried to replicate the issue and had the same problem. I then tried opening a raw file after each step and found that CS4 stopped responding after the Render Lens Flare step. Don't know what to do about it but it seems that's the process that is causing the issue.

Running through all the steps again but omitting the Lens Flare step worked just fine and CS4 opened the raw file normally.

I just tried it again using Render Clouds instead of Render Lens Flare and CS4 locked up when opening the raw file. So, it seems it's the Render filter in general, not specifically the Lens Flare option causing the problem.

another message from my friend as well:

"I was able to replicate the lockup without going through all of your steps and with and without Bridge being open. I can open any file, even a low res file, and just apply Lens Flare. CS4 64-bit locks up. "

I'm seeing the same behavior. This seems to only be effecting the 64-bit version of Photoshop on Windows. You should be able to work with the 32-bit version of Photoshop when engaging this workflow to avoid the issue, as a workaround. Unfortunately, Photoshop CS4 is now out of the production cycle and we are not likely to release an update to address this issue. Especially considering that Photoshop CS5 is not encountering the same.
