Photoshop: CC pen tool lags

In Photoshop CC the pen tool lags about half second from when it is initially clicked. This makes it very hard to work fast using paths. It literally takes half a second for an anchor point to appear after clicking.

Interesting Fred, but I'm not following when you say "multi-threading". What type of issue is this, and what can our approach be to try and remedy it?

Nothing in this topic has been deleted that I can see.

And while a few people are seeing slowdowns, most users are not, and we can't reproduce a slowdown on our systems.

Then try to reproduce it on their systems or similar )
I also reported this problem
And no answer...

Photoshop: Can`t use pen tool on windows7(x86) on ps and because of hard lags and delay on mouse left click..

Can`t use pen tool on windows7(x86) on ps and because of hard lags and delay on mouse left click. These lags are also presents on cloud version of ps cs6 (13.1.2) and on all versions of ps cc include 14.1.2. On ps and earlier there is no any pen lags.

Will be there any fix? Do you know about this ploblem?

p.s. sorry for my english.

So it appears our solution to solve this problem, which remember also includes not being able to set path operations with the hotkeys - and =, is install Windows 8? Really?? Could someone from Adobe please at least express concern at this point, and that the issue is being addressed?

Andy, what I mean is that we have high end processors that use 8 cores. The relation I see between all of us is somehow PS doesn't seem to work so well with 8 core processors?

Any thoughts from adobe on this?

Photoshop does well with any number of cores. Scaling probably won't be as good above 32 cores, however.

By mutli-threading I mean the ability of PS to use all 8 cores efficiently. This is beyond my expertise...just throwing thoughts out there.

Yeah, the number of cores has nothing to do with this - unless there is a previously undetected OS or CPU bug.

Windows 8 does not solve the problem. I work on win7/win8 now on win 8.1,
I'm using at the moment and AMD (Phenom II) as well as Intel (Xeon) processors NVIDIA graphics Card and AMD GPUs, and still come across this problem. It is far better on my HP Z620, but still not perfect - especially after 2-3 hours with PS/Illustrator when only solution is close all projects and reload adobe programs because i can't see what i'm doing because of this lag.

At this point I'm just hoping someone from Adobe is addressing the issue at all...

So, Chris, is this something that is being addressed and fixed soon?

After many attempts, we still cannot reproduce any such slowdown. So there is not much we can do.

Ok, thanks for your reply.

My only response, and it's a very obvious one, would be- Why not find a colleague, friend, customer, whoever it may be, who is experiencing the pen tool lag and address the issue with his/her computer?

Ok, fair enough. Thanks again for responding. I suppose I'll be forced to reinstall CS6 until the issue is resolved. This glitch is just too frustrating.

You might be better off checking your system to see why it is slowing down on your system and not for millions of other users.

Well Chris, that's fine. I can check my system again, but this "slow down" as you call it isn't all there is. Remember those that are having the pen tool issues also can't preset path operations with the - and = keys. Are you saying our systems are causing this as well?

As I'm sure you've read, the pen tool lag issue suddenly goes away at random times, then starts up again. So yes, there's still a chance it's system related, but don't you think one of use by now would have found a common culprit?

My next plan of attack is to disable virtually all start up processes, reboot, start PS first thing and see if the pen tool is lagging. Then from there all I know to do is to keep switching preferences around in PS, trying different combinations of drawing modes, etc.. BUT what does that tell us?? I'm a simple guy, and in no way a programmer, but that seems to be a software-related issue does it not?

It still sounds to me like something on your system is causing some of these symptoms, like a plugin, a utility, or another application. And sometimes external causes aren't obvious (like drivers, or other apps).
And yes - that sort of debugging might help narrow down the possible causes.

I'd like to try something, if you all wouldn't mind helping...

Those you of that are having the pen tool issues, can you tell me if any of your running processes on your Win7 64 system are the same as mine? I'm trying to narrow down a possible culprit. It seems at times that after I boot up and start PS immediately, the pen tool lag goes away temporarily, so I'm wondering if a certain process is causing the issue. And it makes sense if it's a Windows exclusive process or app.

Currently running (ones with asterisk also run on startup):

Task Coach*
Zone Alarm Firewall*
Egnyte Map Drive*
NvBackend* (nvidia updater)
I also have a couple autohotkey scripts on startup, but I couldn't imagine those would hinder anything

Thanks to anyone who helps out!

All of this begun after this update

So after this:
"Notable Windows specific bugs fixed
Pen tool input doesn’t draw correctly
What was that bug? I dont know about it. All day long i work with pen tool.
And know the bug even on PS 14.2.1 incorrect pen output when GPU is off and "constrain path draggig" if off.

Ok guys I just wanna update you all in regards to the original topic...

I've been trying to narrow down to a specific process on my system that could be causing the pen tool lagging. Here's what I've found so far. I did a restart, opened up Photoshop first thing before any apps, and there was no lag. Also, here is a list of processes, as of today, that seem to NOT cause the lag:

task coach
egnyte map drive
belkin monitor
12 processes of Chrome(!)

I will add to the above list as I confirm which does not affect the pen tool

Currently, I still have no lag in the pen tool. HOWEVER, after I opened a PDF and ran Acrobat, there WAS a lag. I closed Acrobate.exe with task manager, and the lag stopped! Now, before we get overly excited, I did reopen Acrobat to test, and I couldn't get the lag to come back. So, Chris, or any Adobe folks on here, based on my testing so far, do you have any input on what's happening?

Hey everyone,

So Chris, or whoever from Adobe may see this...

I was thinking this morning, as my pen tool continues to lag and I'm unable to preset path operations with shortcut keys.....

You guys keep deferring by telling us Win7 64 users there must be a process or system setting on our machines that's causing the problem. Fine. Maybe there is a process that cause CC to behave this way. How is it then our systems fault? I've searched diligently, trying to narrow down a setting/process that's causing the issue. But the glaring truth remains. WE DIDN'T HAVE THE ISSUE WITH CS6. Doesn't this fact demand that it's the software's fault??

Why should we hunt down and end processes one by one until your software works correctly?

Please explain this to me, and many others in the thread. I for one will not brush this issue under the rug. It greatly and adversely affects my daily workflow.

I have the same problem since the last update. When you just open a picture, everything is fine. But as you do something, the mouse click operations have more and more delays (freezes at pressing the mouse). This affects all operations: selection, moving a path point, color picking, etc... The only solution is closing and reopening the PhotoShop (reloading a file does not help). I also tried reducing and turning off video acceleration, changing the allowed memory usage. It looks like at each click operation they create a history restore point sticking with some clutter.

64 bit, AMD (latest drivers), Kaveri A10, 8 GB mem, SSD as the primary disk, plenty of free space.

This PhotoShop CS6 is a strange beast. It does not look like they take care of the bugs. E.g. in the Russian version (I had to buy a localized one because it was much cheaper) when you convert an image to grayscale you get a dialog with two buttons: "Cancel" and "Cancellation", and you just have to guess where to click. The super-simple and obvious bug is present from the beginning and not fixed so far.

Make sure you have installed all the CS66 updates. And you are already 2 major versions of Photoshop behind...

And you still need to see what on your system (drivers or other applications) could be slowing down Photoshop. This is not a problem that most people experience, and seems to be caused by things outside of Photoshop.

I have all the updates installed, tried it without starting other applications.
Since a) I do not have this kind of lags (or any other lags) in other software packages (including the ones which we develop ourselves) and b) this problem was not present before the last updates and c) the problem is not present when I just open Photoshop and the lag increases while working, I am not sure how it may be related to the things outside of the Photoshop.

I do not switch to the newer Photoshop versions because of the changed license model. We are using it sporadically to draw icons and screen previews and one-time license would be fine, while paying money each year seems to be overshooting. Also, looking at bugs which you encounter immediately after installing the software and starting working even after this long support cycle in CS6, I am not sure that the new version will be better.

Just a couple more:
- auto selection in the move tool was not working properly and it took me some time to understand that the setting whether to select a layer or a layer group are just exchanged (I do not know, maybe it is again an improper translation into the Russian)

- when you just install the software and set the grid to 1 pixel, it does not match the pixel grid:

Of course, I understand that Adobe here is a monopolist and it will need some time for other tool to reach the proper level, but when such an advanced program has such glitches that are easily seen, are easy to fix but never fixed - this makes me feel that the company, being proud of the software does not care about the needs that might be essential to the user workflow.

I might sound somewhat too aggressive but that glitches is not what I expected for that money.

all drivers are up to date.

Any explenation?

I found a technique that works for me.

While having the Pen Tool selected, look at the top tool panel.

- Click on the "Align" icon (3rd from the left of the Auto Add/Delete check box)

- Check "Align to Canvas" (mine was defaulted to Align to Selection)

That's it!!

This worked for me - even when I selected "Align to Selection" again.

This may be a temporary workaround, meaning you may have to do it after closing Photoshop and re-opening, but at least it fixes the problem for your current session.

Please test and report back. Would love to see if this helps anyone else.

I had this problem about 10 months ago but it went away with an update. Now it's back again. It makes the pen tool pretty much unusable at any decent speed.

I'm still experiencing a delay on my click/software response of the pen tool, but interestingly, as another poster previously mentioned, I have no delay when using my Wacom Intuos4 Medium tablet. The delay only occurs with my mouse (I'm using a wired Logitech). Maybe a Wacom driver incompatibility or a mouse issue?
