Photoshop CC hasn't had any updates yet. There were some updates to external components (like ACR), but that would not affect opening of PSD files.

Can you post one of those files somewhere so that we can examine it?

As I recall, this was an issue with Topaz. I would suggest uninstalling that and trying again. If the problem is indeed Topaz, then you will need to follow up with that manufacturer.

Thanks,
David

David, you know that this is a public site, therefore, if a solution has been provided...then share it!

I am not sure what's not being shared.

In the past, I've heard similar reports and the culprit was Topaz.  It is not my place to offer support for a third-party product; users should contact the manufacturer.

If Topaz is not the issue, then I'm happy to troubleshoot with users.

Thanks,
David

Hi, I don't want to open new thread. I have similar problem. After some update I can not open psd files from CC in CS6. Event simple file with few layers.
How can I fix this? We have CC and CS6 in our office so projects are edited in CC and CS6.
Adobe webpage says that this should be no problem.

It shouldnt' be a problem, unless the file is corrupted.
There are no incompatibilities in the file format.

I am having this problem as well. A psd that was made in the version of photoshop I am using no longer 'is compatible' with my version of of photoshop(the same version it was made in) Adobe CC(CS6).

David, can you share what solution you came up with for Oliver?
Please and thank you.

Howdy Charles,

Oliver's problem was actually an incompatibility with a TOPAZ plugin. I would, however, be happy to troubleshoot your problem. What exactly seems to be happening? What steps do you perform to get it? Does it happen every time? Which OS and language are you running?

Thanks,
David

I started a psd yesterday, saved it and closed it. Today I tried to open that same file and it gave me the error message 'could not complete your request because this file is not compatible with this version of photoshop'. I've tried 3 different methods of opening the file-drag into PS CS6 while open, double clicking to open, and open with... and I've gotten the same error each time. The file simply no longer opens.

I'm working on a Windows 7 machine running in English. I've been using Adobe products on this same machine since CS5. I also have a MacBook with PS CS6 on it so I gave that a shot and the same thing happened. Oddly enough the thumbnail preview of my file on mac DOES display which gives me a glimmer of hope that my file is still intact.
The file name is Willow_Tree_01_18_14.psd, it is 608 MB, and 8000X4523px saved onto the internal hard drive of my Windows 7 Machine.
Much Thanks,
CB

As far as I can tell the issue with psd files that contain Layers that solidly exceed 30.000 px dimensions still persists and the files fail to open with the warning »Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.
Is there a chance you included a very large Layer in your file (possibly the result of some transformation)?

Thank you Christoph, an over 30,000 px layer seems to have been the issue and yes PS is up to date.

Howdy Slayer,

Any chance that you're running Topaz?  There was an incompatibility with it and Photoshop, which was the source of a couple of the problems.  If you'd like to send me a SMALL file, I'd be happy to test it on my end.  My email is David <dot> Mohr <at> Adobe <dot> com.

Hi Nathan,

Are you running Topaz?  What settings are you using to save your files?  Can you send me a small sample file?

Thanks,
David

Happened to me just now -- worked on a psd, saved, closed, tried to reopen and the message: Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.

Very nice, Adobe, how I'm gonna submit the artwork to print now? What shall I tell my client? 'Sorry but your artwork is no longer compatible?' Bollocks, honestly.

Thanks for Time Machine, sorry Windows users.
