Photoshop will not open or recognize png files

Last night in Photoshop, all of the menus, lettering, etc. started to get weird and leave out letters (I think it was mainly "i" and "l". I stopped the program and restarted and everything was fine. Then, later on, for no reason, the Photoshop Icon disappeared from the dock of my macbook. I clicked and dragged from the Applications menu, to return it to the dock, but now when I try to open Photoshop (whether from the dock or the applications menu) Photoshop usually will not open or takes a VERY LONG TIME to open (Force Quit Box says Photoshop is not responding). The rare time I get Photoshop open, it will no longer recognize any of the .png files that it has been recognizing. I'm using CS3, and I know it's an older version, but this still seems unreasonable...also, when I try to open Photoshop now, my computer opens up Firefox and a prompt to download Adobe Flash (even though I already have a more recent download of Flash). Any help is appreciated...I'm a novice though...if you get too technical I'll get lost! Thanks!

Sounds like your application installation is damaged, and Photoshop can't find the required plugins for some reason.

You probably need to uninstall and reinstall Photoshop, and check your system for other disk problems.
