Howdy Tom,

Can you tell me more about the lagging you are encountering with type?  What exactly happens?  How long does the lag persist?  Does it impact tasks you initiate later?  Does it make a difference the amount of text selected/committed?  I'm assuming that you're using the standard text engine (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, no worries, you are).  And your text is in English (or similar language)?  Are you using emoji or variable fonts?  Does this happen with all fonts?  Specific fonts?  Do you have third-party fonts on your machine?  Are they from reputable foundaries or random internet sites?  Have you checked the integrity of your font cache (steps here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop.html)?

Thanks,
David

I did some snooping afterwards and found that it was a bad plugin from Extensis Suitcase Fusion. They updated the plugin some time ago and I guess it broke 2018. I removed the plugin but kept suitcase installed and it seems to have solved the problem.
