Photoshop: Randomly needs to resave file and makes pixel pushing going to 10px

Kind of hard to describe but randomly when working in photoshop all of a sudden when Im using the arrow keys to move objects, it won't move by pixel anymore but jumps to moving like 10-20 pixels at a time and then I have to resave the file in order for it to work properly again. I'm using PS2018 on windows. So let's say I'm resizing an image and then I need to move it to the left. So I'll transform it, and then using the arrow keys I'll move it left a few pixels. All of a sudden though, maybe this is after a save, it will stop being able to move pixel by pixel and instead will force me to move by 10-20 pixels at a time. Something happens to photoshop where I have to resave the file again, and when I hit control + s it goes to the save as command, not the regular save. Hopefully this gives enough detail but this happens randomly so not sure how to track it down.

Howdy Alex,

Can you tell us more about your system setup?  Which version of Windows are you running?  What kind of keyboard/mouse are you using?  Are you using a tablet?  What other apps do you have running at the same time?

I haven't heard of this nor can I reproduce this, so I need more information.

Thanks,
David

Sure Im using windows 10 latest version, mechanical keyboard like ducky one 2, steelseries rival 310 mouse. I'll usually have firefox or chrome running, maybe bridge, not a lot of stuff. This is why its hard to pin down because it happens randomly but has been happening more frequently on my computer at work. I'll be working on an image and then this will happen out of nowhere so I either have to resave the image with Save As or close everything out and restart photoshop. Maybe this conicides with creative cloud libraries because I think that might be an issue here. I get a lot of conflicted files with CC libraries and maybe its happening when I save them. I work with my boss on email designs so we have the creative cloud files folder we put all of the emails in. Very frequently when I save a design in there, the PSD becomes conflicted. Maybe this is happening with some type of error when the PSD gets conflicted when I save. I save a lot out of habit.

David I found out why this is happening. It only happens when bridge is open when photoshop is open. It will happen randomly but when I close bridge the problem goes away. Maybe it's an interaction bug between photoshop and bridge causing it.

Howdy Alex,

How frequently are you getting this with Bridge open, because with a couple of tests, I wasn't able to reproduce this.  Are you seeing this once an hour, one every ten minutes, ... ?  I'd like to narrow this down and log a bug about it before I go out on vacation.

Thanks,
David

Hey David,
It's more like every 45 minutes to an hour or something, I haven't timed it so I think it's kind of random but if you were to leave bridge open and photoshop open and then work on files in Photoshop normally, I think the bug would appear at some point. What I do is work on emails out of a folder in photoshop with bridge open and then it will happen. I don't know if it has anything to do with working off folders on a mapped network drive. I don't think it does because if I have bridge closed and open up an email PSD on the network drive, it works fine. If I have bridge open and do that, that's when this happens.

Howdy Alex,

Sorry for the late follow-up -- now that I'm back in the office I wanted to chase this bug down for you.

Are the files that you're working on a network?  Have you tried working only on local copies?  As I recall, there might be issues with PSDs over a network, so I'd like to rule that out if we could.

I have been leaving PS and Bridge open on my Win10 machine, but no issues yet.

Thanks,
David

Hey David,

I'm going to try and test this out today or Monday to see if its the network causing it. If it does end up being having PSDs on the network, what can we be done about that? Since I work on a team with remote people, we need to share these PSDs on either a network or creative cloud. It happens on both creative cloud and on the network as well. One other thing I noticed when this happens, even if I have bridge closed, is that photoshop will do that thing where if you hit the regular save command it does a save AS like you've never saved the file before, it then opens up bridge with a prompt that says "Reset Settings", and it ups the pixel jumping when using the arrow keys so you're jumping like 10 pixels at a time instead of 1.

Ok ran a test using a file I was working off my desktop and it happened again so it can't just be the network

Howdy Alex,

So, just so you know, I work on many of my PSDs across a network too.  It's not suggested for huge files, but people do it.

You said that when you have this problem, Photoshop treats Save as Save As instead.  That implies that there's some sort of disconnection from the original file, which is one of the vulnerabilities of large files shared over a network.  Could you be overwhelming your network with this file or perhaps your machine is dropping network packets?  How large a file are we talking here?

What might be most helpful is a web-hosted screenshare, so I can actively help you troubleshoot.  Interested?  What timezone are you in?  All you need is an internet connection and to make a toll-free call.

Thanks,
David

The file sizes are varied but some are not very big like email designs or something and this happens. This has also happened with files that aren't on the network drive. I was working on a file from Friday that was on my desktop and it happened. I can do a screenshare but it would have to be when this actually happens since it's random and I can't predict it. I don't know how we could set that up so when it does cause the problem with bridge and Photoshop we can look at it.

Howdy Alex,

I'll respond with my direct email address, which I check many times a day when I'm in the office.  Next time you see this, ping me and if I can I'll set up a screenshare, ok?

Thanks,
David
