Hi Ron, I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking if files make in Photoshop 6 are incompatible with Photoshop 4 or Photoshop 5? If so, in general, the basic structure of files are backwards compatible. Some new features or layer types may not work in older version.

I will make this as simple as possible and give you two examples to further help your solution.
1) I am a photographer and use many computers including a few "windows" machines
2) One of the most required and used applications is Photoshop which had been installed on all but one windows computer and all functioned fine.
3)  I downloaded Photoshop PS6 (PS for short) for both Mac and Windows.
4) I installed PS6 on the Mac which works fine as does PS4 and PS5.
5) I installed PS6 on the Windows machines which resulted in various problems.
6) Several of the windows computers already contained PS4 and PS5 and worked fine prior to installing PS6
7) Attempting to open PS6 on windows results in either PS6 slowly coming up only after displaying various messages a) "Another instance of PS6 is already running on this computer" which is not true in that PS6 is not already running on this computer or b) displaying "do you want PS6.exe to run on this computer? If I answer "yes" it will slowly open and work correctly or c) PS6 has encountered an "error 6" message - you must install Adobe application manager" which I have done and which did not help at all.
8) None of the windows computers containing PS4 or PS5 will allow these two versions to work at all.
9) I uninstalled PS4 and reinstalled it and it does work correctly but doing that prevents PS6 from running
10) As mentioned before one windows computer has only PS6 installed - no other PS application
yet displays the same problems attempting to run PS6 as mentioned above.
There are some applications that are only made for windows and that is the reason for having that platform - my experience over 20+ years working with images and developing applications goes back to 1957 starting with the IBM 650 and many years writing for the Navy and NASA.
All Adobe products are seamless and function well together on the Mac. Overall problems with windows machines are far too numerous to attempt to list.
Thank you,
