Photoshop: Problem with color on color

Hi, so I'm new to Photoshop. But I can't seem to be able to paint another color on an already painted color. For example, I pick orange as a base color and decided to have some purple on it, but somehow only the sides of the orange colored piece is painted with purple. As soon as the brush hits the orange spot it fades away quickly and seems to be smudged out. If I draw directly on the orange, nothing happens. Doesn't matter with what kind of brush I'm using, the same thing occur all the time.

Is there anyway to change this? I know it worked perfectly before but somehow I've managed to change something. Sorry, everything is in Japanese!

Change the blend mode for the brush.  With Normal blend mode, you're only blending the feathered edges of the brush, and mostly replacing the color.

Thank you so much! I have no idea how I managed to change the brush.
