Photoshop: Occasionally freezes/crashes on Undo

Hi,
I have the problem that Photoshop hangs infinitely sometimes after using undo (the new undo). There is no error, it just freezes and I have to shut it down over task manager.

I am using Photoshop CC 20.0.5, but tried also 19.1.8 and had there the same problem.

I am using Windows 10, have the latest Nvidia driver (431.36).

Also using a Wacom graphic tablet with the latest driver.

I already reset the preferences but with no success.

Don't know what I can do anymore to make it work. Kind of impossible to work with this problem.

Same for me. It happens a lot. happens to my friend, both when we are using our graphics tablets. I'm using a 2015 nividia gforce driver with all latest updates. Other than that its a great program thus far but it does become irritating after a while.

Howdy Paul and Laurian,

What sort of things are you doing in PS that you're undoing, so I can get an idea what's going on?  I'd like to help troubleshoot this, but the first step would then be to replicate what you're seeing.

Thanks,
David

Hi there,

Usually using the pen tool to sketch on my graphics tablet. If one presses the undo button a few times while trying to get the correct line then it seems to freeze and in order to stop it then you must either fiddle with the trackpad mouse and move the pen away from the tablet surface, or minimise photoshop momentarily from the taskbar menu before reopening it up to full size. Usually the page reopens slowly, with the photoshop icons taking a few seconds to 'pop' in.

This leads me to suspect it might be lag between the graphics tablet and photoshop rendering it on the screen after using the undo tool. It isn't a major issue but can get irritating. I would love some advice on how to solve it.

Cheers,

Laurian

Howdy Laurian,

Have you tried updating the drivers for your tablet or have you tried with a different tablet?  Which OS are you running?

Thanks,
David

In my case the problem occurred when using the brush or erasing tool. The number of strokes does not seem to be relevant. I had it, that I started Photoshop and doing only one brush stroke and a following undo that the freeze occurs. When it freezes, then there is no way to make it work again. Killing the process is the only possibility.

I am not totally sure, but it seems that bigger and more "complicated" brushes trigger the problem more than smaller, simple brushes. But the problem is really hard to reproduce sometimes it will freeze right at the start and sometimes I can normally work for hours without the problem.

I can attest to finding that the issue appears more frequently with more complex brushes, and likewise that it is a sporadic occurrence- sometimes it interrupts repeatedly with each brush stroke and at other times it won't happen for hours.

I do think we are describing the same issue but it seems to be more managable for myself than for Paul. I haven't yet had to kill Photoshop to get the program working again.

I too have been having the same problem. When I am drawing on the tablet with Photoshop cc I am finding that if I use multiple undo buttons when trying to get exact lines for line art the program just freezes. I am not sure whats going on with the program to cause this issue. I am working a really high end computer for the most part and I know its not related to the computer processes. I do not know how to fix this problem as it is becoming very annoying to work with. Sometimes it happens once in a while other times it will happen constantly back to back. Can you please let me know how to fix this.

Howdy Naomi,

When you say "multiple undo buttons" do you mean multiple shortcuts on your tablet?  Are you, by chance, running a Wacom tablet...?  Also, what sort of tasks are you doing when this happens (type, transform, painting, artboards, etc)?  And, which OS (Mac, right)?

Thanks,
David

I have had this issue for a while as well, and I'm yet to find a solution, was really hoping to find something here... For me, it's always with brushes and (presumably) only when I use my graphics tablet. Hard to tell if it would happen without it, considering whenever I use the brush tool I also use the tablet. For me also, it either happens after a couple of brush strokes, or after hours of working on something, and I can not make it work again without ending the task.  I run Photoshop CC 2019 and Win 10. Also, definitely not a computer problem.

This seems to be the exact behavior, that I am having too. The brush tool in combination with a wacom tablet. I am not 100% sure, but I think this problems occurred sometimes also when just doing a brush stroke.

What I have found is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9EtXYbZZXQ
and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exbpmysEZoQ
The described problem there is quite similar.  I am not using my tablet and photoshop too much, so I can't really say till now, if the solution there has worked or not.

Howdy Paul,

Are you also running PS CC 2019 on Win10?

Thanks,
David

Howdy Anet,

What other apps do you have open when this happens?  If it happens after a couple of strokes OR hours, then there's almost certainly another element involved which triggers it (in a couple strokes).  Are you sure your driver is up to date?  What brand is it?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,
Yes I use Windows 10. Didn't had problems with Windows 7. I switched to Windows 10 in January. I hadn't used Photoshop frequently in that time, so I don't know if the problem started on switching to Windows 10 or appeared some time later.

Hey David,

Yep, PS CC on Windows 10 Home with Wacom Intuos Pro.  Been using PS and Wacom for several years.  Performance used to be tied in only to brush size and complexity.  Now, PS seems to be getting more and more finicky and unpredictable.  Not sure what the culprit is, but other programs don't have the same problems.

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks, Paul.  Are you also finding this happens sometimes at first and other times not until hours have passed?  What other apps are you running?  Have you tried without your tablet?  Checked for an updated driver?  What about hard disk space?  How much scratch space do you have when this happens?

Hey David,

PS is updated to the latest version.  Wacom's latest drivers have been installed.  Scratch disk has 75% free on a 1 Terabyte SSD drive.  I do digital illustrations so I'm always using my pen and tablet, sooo, haven't tested without the tablet.  Usually have Chrome open while watching a video or listening to music.

Thanks,
Paul

This solution does not work for me. When I enable WinTab photoshop goes insanely laggy.

Same thing.  It's September of 2019 and this issue still hasn't been solved.  Every time I use undo, even if it's just a single undo, causes freezing.  I might use a semi-complex brush which will work fine initially, and then slowly get to the point where I have to wait for about half a minute for a stroke to catch up.  Working on illustrations for a Children's Book project and it's gotten to the point where I spend too much time trying to get Photoshop to work and not enough time actually working.  Alt-Tab is a temporary fix but it's getting to the point where even that doesn't work.  8-core, 16 thread 1st gen Ryzen, 32 GB RAM, 500GB NVME SSD and 1TB SSD, Radeon 580, Wacom Intuos Pro on a Windows 10 Home desktop PC.  Other programs like Paint Tool Sai, Krita, Clip Studio Paint, etc. all  perform blazingly fast compared to PS.  As much as I want to switch, I also do graphic design and PS is part of my workflow.

Sam problem here. Undoing after using the brush freezes PS either for a very long time, or just completely crashes. I'm using  Adobe Photoshop Version: 20.0.2 20181219.r.30 on Windows 10 with an Intuos 3 Wacom Tablet.

Are you using the legacy undo or the new undo? I had it switched to legacy and it was freezing constantly. I just switched to the newness to see how it is.

Fix.. at least temporarily.
Whenever it freezes I simply move my cursor (Wacom tablet) to the top of the file
window and move the whole window a bit. Just a little left or right. Sadly it's become
second nature now, but only slows down the workflow by a bit.

I am having the exact same problem! it's getting quite frustrating! I use the brush tool with my Wacom intuos pro tablet, and after clicking undo once or twice the program completely freezes. I end up having to force restart my computer which sometimes causes lost data. I am on a brand new acer predator helios 300 laptop and everything else runs quite smoothly so it's not a computer problem for me either.

Well, here I am having the same issue. I'm on the old Cintiq 21UX with updated drivers. I've just cleaned up my hard drive as much as I can. Lets see if that helps

This issue should be fixed in current versions of Windows 10.
