It appears that with yesterday's installation of Catalina on my Mac, Photoshop is not saving to the proper file format.  When attempting to save a .tif file to a save as .jpg file, I choose the JPEG file format in the dropdown menu, but Photoshop doesn't recognize this and saves the file as a .tif file, then sends me a warning message asking if I want to replace the .tif file with the new one.  I have to manually delete the .tif extension and type in .jpg for the file to be saved to the proper format.  Many times, and this was well before installing Catalina, Photoshop also saves a file to a previously opened folder rather than the one I am working on, and I have to search for the saved file.  MADDENING!  I did see several posts regarding the file save issues, but this has only happed to me since installing Catalina yesterday.

I'm not on Catalina, and it sounds like I won't be anytime soon, but are you saying that the Preference in PS "Save As to Original Folder" isn't working? Unchecked, it should save to the last-used folder, which you have to set manually at least once. Checked, it should save to the folder the file came from. Not working?

Not working -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't!

That's certainly annoying. I haven't noticed it myself. I'm on Mac running Mojave. I'll keep a closer watch since you say it has happened before Catalina. It would be great if you could pin down anything at all that is consistent when it doesn't save where you expected it to. I know—that will take a bit of time since it's one of those dreaded intermittent issues. But if possible. . . Because if they can't replicate it, they won't have any idea what will fix it.

Sometimes Photoshop does not seem to recognize that I have changed to a different folder and saves to the previous, one, two, or three folders before the current one.  Sometimes I am working on a project, go to a folder in Bridge, and I will see files that don't belong in a specific folder...Photoshop has saved them in the wrong folder.  Usually I can catch it because I'm looking for the file and realize that it's not where it's supposed to be!  That's all that I can say about it, because sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't, and only the Photoshop gods know how and when they will make the decisions!  This has happened for about the previous six months, perhaps after another Mac update...?

It's possible that with Apple messing about with the file system, something has gotten farkled, at least under certain circumstances. And I think, but don't actually know—so grain of salt and all that, that PS relies upon the system for much of this. If something has changed, their controls may no longer work the way they did.

That preference has been one of the most reliable in my experience, but all preferences are subject to corruption (delete and start fresh), and interference by, it seems, just about anything you wouldn't even expect, including having new versions of PS add new preferences, and for some reason that makes the whole file delicate if it's trying to apply them on top of old preferences.

If you haven't refreshed your Preferences in awhile, in your place I'd at least give that a go—after making certain I had all my presets and custom workspaces safely backed up somewhere.

But you may well put yourself through that and still have the problem. It's just the easiest test for a solution I know of.

I have had quite a few problems with Photoshop crashing while saving files, especially layered files, but the problem may lie with files being saved to external WD hard drives and not to the internal hard drive.  The file is many times saved but is corrupted and cannot be used.  I do send in a system report for every crash, so they are getting the info.

This is a known problem with Photoshop on Catalina. It does save the proper file, but it does not change the extension. Please read this kind of info before you update, or before you post here.
