Photoshop locks up when using type tool + adobe preview

This is a problem we've discovered within our agency, many of us across the agency are having it - all on the latest versions of photoshop/CC.

When plugged into a compatible device (ie ipad, iphone) and using Adobe Preview to view our designs in the context of a device, the app will lock up when trying to commit or exit a text field. Essentially, you cannot do anything. Can't save your design, can't quit photoshop, can't click on any other tools. The only solution is to force quit photoshop.

Again, multiple members of my design team are experiencing this same bug. It only happens with text fields. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Howdy Daniel,

Just to make sure I understand the issue that you're facing, you're NOT having problems with the Type tool itself, but rather with any text fields in Adobe Preview, correct?  Which version of PS are you running (first line under Help > System Info)?  And which OSes are you running?  This should help me track down the issue.

Thanks,
David

Howdy Daniel,

Are you having this problem with one file or with all files?  Could you describe the steps you're going through in a little more detail?  Where does the test field come in?

I actually have never used this app, but I borrowed an iPad and got it working in just a minute.  I also tried with an older app and that also worked.  Could it be a setup issue?

Thanks,
David

Hey David,

The issue is with the type tool within photoshop, but we only run into the issue when we're using adobe preview to preview a file on a device.

We're having this issue with multiple files across multiple computers. However, it is pretty erratic. It's not every time you try to work with a text box. If I'm working in a file for 3 hours, it may happen 4 or 5 times.

But to give you a more detailed overview of what happens: if  I click into a text field, change the copy out, and hit command+enter to commit my changes/esc to discard my changes, sometimes, I get locked in the text field. I can still type characters into the text field, but I can't escape, can't commit, can't move the text box, can't save the file (or use any other tool for that matter). The only way out is to force quit. I CAN actually click on different tools in the toolbar, but typically I can only click one, then the toolbar icons disappear, and I'm left to force quit.

We're all on macs, running 10.12.4 , we're all on the absolute latest version of photoshop. That said, I've had this issue for a few months.

I will also note, larger, more processor intensive files tend to be more susceptible to this issue.

I can attempt to do a screen capture if the above is not helpful!

Howdy Daniel,

Hmmm...are you sure you have the latest update that came out a couple weeks ago?  We did have a bug that is sorta similar when committing text.  You should have 2017.1.1.  You can check via Help > System Info.

Is there a pattern with regard to which fonts you might be using or whether you're using features like Faux Bold?  The very first thing I tried was a picture of my daughter with text and that worked in a number of times with a number of different fonts at different sizes.  But the fact that it's intermittent doesn't help.  What size documents are you working with?  How much text?  What point size?

A screen capture (or especially a video) would be excellent.  I'd really like to help, but I'm kind of at a loss to repro this.

Thanks,
David

Also, Daniel, are you having trouble when physically connected or via WiFi?

Thanks,
David

Physically connected typically, although that's mostly because the wifi connection on Adobe Preview rarely works.

I'm going to try to get a video screencap today if i can - stay tuned!
