Photoshop eraser not updating in real time

Hi! I updated Adobe Photoshop earlier today. After doing so, I now have a problem where when I use the eraser tool, optically it does not work, but if I change the visibility of a layer below the layer I erased on, then the visuals will update and show what I have erased.

Lots of others have reported similar problem; one of the Adobe people on this forum has reported it and you can find that thread including a workaround by using the search box at top of this page.

In Photoshop go to Edit - Preferences- Performance and then uncheck the box Legacy Compositing
