Photoshop Elements 2019 locking up frequently on Mac OS 10.14.2

My Photoshop Elements 2019 is locking up frequently on Mac OS Mojave 10.14.2. (I have an SSD & 16GB of RAM, and aren't working with big files - shouldn't be an issue.)

It will work fine for a while, and then it will "get tired" and every action takes like 20 seconds. So then I have to try to save my file and then close the program, and re-open the program and continue.

Also, if I leave it open for a while (overnight, etc.) it's usually locked up and I need to Force Quit PSE19.

As a tech I will only say this one time:  It is not PSE and it is not your OS.  Since it locks up after a few minutes then unlocks whenever software is suspended then relaunched, this sounds much like a common hardware problem.  Before checking out software, a tech will always check hardware first.  Take it to a certified tech who can check your computer.  A computer will behaves like that when memory is slightly ajar.  Take it to a Mac guy.  I am a Windows guy from Microsoft so you may not want me to help you with a Mac.  I am certified on hardware as well, but I cannot check your computer hardware in a forum.  This is not software related, and there are no complaints of a lock up from PSE 2019.

Thanks Steve; it's possible it's a hardware issue; I use a lot of other software on this same MacBook though, and haven't been having these sorts of symptoms with other programs, and got PSE 2019 a few weeks ago and it's been acting up, so rather assumed it must be something specific to the software...

A good tech will check hardware first and foremost, and that includes the cables before taking your box to a shop.  It could be the local drive has a dead sector.  Everything I can think of is mostly hardware.  Checking with the Internet, there has not been this problem like this related to Elements 2019 no matter how new it is, it would have came up by now.  

All others are troubleshooting software but that is always a guess unless a tech has found a bug and there is not a report of that.  From the symptoms you describe and as if it's the only app that does this, IF it's software related, you will need to troubleshoot software. 

It could be too many apps open.  Could be the connection with the cloud, or it could be bandwidth within the system which is the same as hardware and would lead to a disconnected memory module like I suggested before.  Also it can be your plugins which you will need to uninstall all of them then plug them in one at a time to see which one is stalling the app.  Do the same with extensions. 

An app doesn't slow down gradually unless it isn't making a connection with the platform, a disc is full or it is a hardware problem.  Also I might suggest an uninstall/reinstall but that may not free up a slow application.  I still think it is hardware.  My 4 year university education in software engineering has always pointed to hardware for such problems.

Thanks Steve - I figured if nobody mentions it they won’t know if there’s a bug. I’m actually a certified IT technician myself and worked in corporate IT for years, but we ran mostly Dell hardware (I dealt with hundreds of computers) which almost never had hardware issues other than bad hard drives. If we had hardware issues it was usually the whole computer locking up or BSOD or such, not just one program grinding to a halt while other programs worked fine. But I’m also less experienced with Mac.

It's a hardware problem and an OS problem too but I will get to that later.  Only because I didn't mention it, I might fill in some of the gaps by saying that plugins and extensions will slow down an application, fast.  For example, MS-Excel does good spreadsheets, but it doesn't do huge sheets as it lags behind and becomes slow and it's worth mentioning because as you described, an app will slow down without slowing the entire system.  That's because it has a lot of bulky programming that needs to play "catch-up" as it lags and slows only in that app.  Adobe apps will lag behind with lots of graphics, layers, and many things you are doing with an application, will slow it down a lot.  So I wanted to fill in those gaps which is worth mentioning. 

Still, this is a hardware related problem.  Even if you don't find hardware problems, it's good to check because if you have a large graphic that is being saved in different page frames throughout the drive, it can slow the system when it is saving to many different page frames all over.  Think of page frames as file folders and those are inside of file partitions.  The page frames are the partitions built for a large file but when it fills up, another is selected and it begins again, and when there are many of those, they can be together and easy to save or they can be saved all over the drive in different places. 

Now add to that a bad drive sector and you have a recipe for a slow system.  But you have only a slow application that has lots of files in page frames all over the place.  That's one problem but it very well be that its a full drive or a hardware problem.  Always check hardware first.  You cannot find page frames to check those.  Let your OS do that work, that's what it's for.  It gathers, sorts, brings it out, puts it away, and makes work for the stuff you never want to do.

I too have this identical problem.  And only with Photo Elements  and only since upgrading my mac operating system to Mojave.  Prior to that Elements had no issues.  I thought it might be my older version of Elements, so I paid to upgrade to the latest version and still have the same issue.  When I first bring up Elements, it runs like a champ.  But it's like it times out if I'm not actively using it, get the dreaded little rainbow ball and have to force quit.  This is almost a daily thing.  When I bring it back up, BINGO we're back in business.  Annoying.  Like Benjamin I've had zero problems with any other programs.  Only Elements.

Seems like there's now lots of users complaining about PSE 2019 issues on Mojave. Hopefully PSE v. 17.1 (currently installing) solves these issues once and for all.

I have had difficulty for months with Photoshop Elements 2019 and on reading these comments now associate The difficulties with Mojave. And as far as hardware being the problem I upgraded to MacBook Pros twice. The second time maximize RAM. The first time to add more video processing power over what I had in my MacBook. That has been costly and offered no relief. Something is up.
