Photoshop Elements 2018 thumbnail problems

My first impression of Photoshop Elements 2018 is not good. The first import of 15.000 images went fine, and the face recognition worked fine as well. But with just a few saved profiles, there is a very long delay when assigning a profile to a group. Then during import of iPhone media files it suddenly stopped, without notice, and without including those pictures already imported. After manually importing these images from the new location, it the got problems generating thumbnails. It started with a few, and then then it started to replace existing thumbnails with the hourglass icon too. Now the library consist of a combination of thumbnails and hourglass icons. The thumbnail creation process is constantly running, but nothing happens. When I click on the images, they show up fine. But manually choosing Update Thumbnail results in nothing, and replaces existing thumbnails with the hourglass. When trying to Optimized the catalog, it renders an error message, and fails. 
In the 2018 version the Repair Catalog option has been removed. How can I repair the catalog? ( The program runs on a super fast MacBook Pro.)

I can't help much because I am not a Mac user... and I don't care at all for face recognition.
I am pretty sure the problem is Mac specific and linked to the way you import from 'iPhone media files'.
About the organizer and thumbnails:
The creation of thumbnails implies reading all files and creating a small version, even from raw files, which means converting. That takes time and runs as a background task. The thumbnail generation is prioritized to update the thumbnails present on your current display.
Updating the thumbnail should be very fast. How big is your library, do you have many raw files?
The 'repair' option is still there in the menu File >> Manage catalogs, the dialog has a 'repair' button.
However, the repair is not related to thumbnails. For that, first:
- run a search for missing files, menu File >> Find >> All missing files.
- from the catalog manager, highlight your current catalog, run 'Optimize' and wait for the thumbnails cache being rebuilt from scratch.

The problem is that after I imported files from the iPhone, the thumbnail generation function has STOPPED WORKING :(
It suddenly started replacing existing thumbnails with the hourglass, and even after a week with trial and error, it is still not working. If I manually choose to update the thumbnail, it is always replaced with the hourglass icon. 

And BTW: The 'repair" function has been removed on the Mac version. When I click 'Optimize', it fails.

What I wonder when errors like this happens, rendering the program I just bought completely useless - where are we to report this to Adobe? I'm sure they know how to fix this.  It cannot be left to the community to do that.
